what would cause just one leg to swell up?

People genuinely try to be helpful on this forum becaise they've BTDT in our difficult to navigate medical system. They are bound to feel a bit stung by someone who posts for help and dismisses all the answers on the grounds that her DH's doctor knows better than they. I am sure that is true. But if she is so sure that everone is wrong because they do not know all the background why is she posting? She could have just done google MD or contacted her DH's amazing doctor.

That said, I do hope OP's DH's condition improves and perhaps she'll be kind enough to update us.

Maybe OP is in Russia? In which case she'd have to sit in the emergency room until next Tuesday to see a doctor anyway if she is proletariat.

Just for the record, I really didn't post for help. I was wondering what could cause swelling just one one side of the leg. I really didn't ask what I should advise my husband to do. If you read my original post, you will see I told you he had already consulted his medical advisor and was going in to be seen. I wondered what could cause this, and when people suggested blood clot and immediate ER visit, I explained a little bit about why I thought that was unlikely. The rest of the "wonderful doctor" stuff was just me trying to explain why, although I know doctors can be wrong, we are willing to trust the guy the sees.

I'm sorry for hurting people's feelings which apparently I have done by failing to take my husband to the ER.

Even in the US if you aren't critical an ER visit can run 6-8 hours for this kind of thing.

People genuinely try to be helpful on this forum becaise they've BTDT in our difficult to navigate medical system. They are bound to feel a bit stung by someone who posts for help and dismisses all the answers on the grounds that her DH's doctor knows better than they. I am sure that is true. Um, yeah the doctor knows better than random, non-medically trained people on the internet. I can't believe you or anyone else would think otherwise.

I don't think any of you understand. OP is afraid that a tumor is causing lymphedema. I'm not OP and I don't know OP, but thats what I get from all these posts. I am the PP who has had lymphedema so I know something about that. I'm assuming her DH has had some sort of cancer in the past. She posted a very generic post because she wants to comfort herself with other possibilities. We've ALL been there. I'm afraid its cancer, what else could it be? So she was probably hoping people would say things like "oh this happened to my cousin and it turned out to be an infection . . ." Instead the suggestions of DVT blossomed into YOU MUST GO TO THE ER or you are some kind of idiot posts. So then she figured she had to explain why she knows its not DVT. Then everyone did the equivalent of screaming at her for withholding information, like she owes you anything. All of you who think you know better than OP and her DH's doctor, acting OFFENDED because OP doesn't see you as her savior, you are acting like crazy people. Have some compassion. Even if I'm not right on the details, its very clear that OP is going through something very, very difficult. This isn't about your egos, this is about a woman with a very sick husband. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

PThe PP said it was no doubt true that OP DH's doctor knew more than DCUMers. PP was just puzzled as to why OP posted wanting an answer to a generic question here instead of googling "causes of swollen leg" herself or calling the doctor, who seems reasonably accessible.

I'm a bit puzzled too, but am sorry to hear OP's DH is so sick.

If it's cellulitis, I'd still get it seen sooner rather than later.

I did google"causes of swollen leg". I'm pretty good at Dr Google but I didn't get much that would be one-sided. I got heart failure, preeclampsia, kidney failure, high blood pressure, and medication, etc. but they all seemed to be conditions that would cause BOTH legs to swell up. I have zero medical background or biological/anatomy background (didn't even take biology in HS to my shame) so I was just wondering what the conditions could be that caused swelling on just one leg not both.

I just figured maybe someone here would be able to tell me.
And they did -- DVT, lymphedema, and cellulitis.
Could also be erysipelas.

After I posted and someone replied with lymphedema I remembered that "edema" means swelling. And the key words to help me google around would be "unilateral" and "edema". So that helped me conduct the rest of my search. Edema means fluid is building up, which could be either blood, or lymphatic fluid. Fluid could be building up because something is stopping it from moving ( a blood clot) or draining (an infections, I guess).
