FG is got great com mutability but not very walkable to much. Still benefits from being a short drive away from costco, metro etc |
+1 But you left out your agreement that SS is for "starter" homes, occupied only briefly by those enroute to greener grass in Olney.

"Whiter" grass, I think. |

| Do all of the neighborhoods that were referenced here as good SS neighborhoods (Forest Glen, Woodmont, etc.) feed into a good HS? Appreciate your feedback as we're looking to buy somewhere in MOCO but never considered Silver Spring. thanks! |
| We recently moved from DTSS to Bethesda (though not close-in). We really tried to stay in DTSS - any of the woodsides - but prices have gone through the roof. We got more house and land for our money in 20817 and much better schools (as of today). While we do miss the walkability, we don't have too many regrets. I do think the schools in SS will improve in the coming years with the influx of wealthy and highly educated. |
There are a number of high schools that feed from SS, but the main ones from the neighborhoods mentioned here are Blair and Einstein. They are both good schools, probably in the second tier of MoCo publics after Whitman, Churchill, WJ, and BCC. You will see Blair mentioned a lot of these boards because it has the science and tech magnet, which routinely is among the top-rated programs in the nation. Blair is also the largest MoCo school, with well over 3,000 kids. Einstein has risen in popularity recently, partly due to the runup in housing prices in the neighborhoods that feed to it. These schools are part of the Down County Consortium (DCC) which you can research on the MCPS web site. Basically, each school has a "draw" and tried to compete to gain students for unique programs. And I know there are exceptions, but the people I know zoned for Blair and Einstein tend to prefer those schools to the others in the consortium. |
+1, and great bike/walking trails steps from our house. Really like it here, but if you want a bit of space/house and you work in DC, the commute is great. |

So you'd recommend? Haven't been yet. |
It's really good. They are now doing brunch. Planning to try it out this weekend |
| I live in Forest Glen. Everyone in my neighborhood is really nice, professionals, etc. The only thing is that I don't have much in common with them. I'm a professional too, but I like to drive luxury cars, go to Europe on vacation, eat in downtown DC restaurants, and carry a designer bag or two. We are the same SES, but they tend to drive Honda minivans, Prius, etc and go on hiking trips, national parks, etc. We probably spend the same on these things, but we're just...different. |
Interesting. I live in Four Corners, so near you. On my block there are a bunch of luxury cars (Acura, couple of BMWs, a Porsche) and people go to Europe all the time and eat in good restaurants. But I do see what you mean -- there's more of a Takoma Park like vibe in some parts of SS (one I personally like) that means people are a little more crunchy. I don't know anyone -- anyone! -- who carries a deisgner bag although, as you say, we could afford it. |
