Why is there so much racism against Asians?

Anonymous
Racism can be found in people from all backgrounds, not only the so-called entitled.

So, the poster from the Prepping/Scamming the CogAT thread finally gets a whole thread on what s/he really wants to post about!

You must be one of those unqualified immigration affirmative action babies with so much animosity to the new and highly qualified American immigrants.

True statement. I doubt Asians in America are inflicting racism on one another.

I am part American Indian, and most of my family came from Europe. There is indeed much racism still. A good deal of it

Is not the root cause distrust or a sense of feeling threatened?
Anonymous
This statement is quite accurate.

Haha the, aa don't like us because we are not white , are first generation and become rich and top students.

This is from another thread:

White applicants may be down because we are scared to compete with the best students in the area. We may call TJ kids robots and only good for test taking etc. and demean them but the fact remains they continue to demonstrate their achievements and competency all around through, NMSF, SAT scores, Intel, Siemens, Presidential Scholars, AMC 12, Scholastic writing awards, outstanding plays, outstanding orchestra performance & assessments, IMO, local debate tournament dominance, Quizbowl dominance, Model UN dominance and with other academic, artistic and creative types of competitions in practically ALL areas (not just in Science/Math, SAT and APs) as well as college acceptances to the best universities in the country. This is in addition to tremendous amount of tutoring and volunteering done by these kids that are lot more than probably any other high school in the county. (Don't say resume padding either since there is less resume padding going on at TJ probably than at other privates or other public high schools in the right neighborhoods such as trips to Africa, let's set up a charity etc. resume padding going on that costs real money). We need to face the reality and try to meet the challenge and not run scared. If you want diversity in a school (kids from dozens of different countries not just Asians), TJ offers lot more diversity than for example Langley or McLean. It's disingenuous to say there is lack of racial/ethnic diversity at TJ. There is plenty of diversity, not just many AA or Hispanics.

Where are the people screaming that dismal % of African American kids and Hispanic kids at TJ is due to their lack of effort, lack of parental commitment and unwillingness to devote time and effort to succeed academically at the highest level. Do we have a double standard here? Where are the people screaming affirmative action discriminates against whites and should be abolished because admissions should be based on merits? If admissions based on merits is too tough than it's time to run and find something else? Furthermore, TJ offers strong foreign language departments, Humanities departments, English departments in addition to advanced Math & Science classes so please do not say " oh my DC wants strong Drama/Music/Humanities" department not just math and science. If a kid is interested more in Humanities than maybe TJ is not the right fit, but if a kid is interested and has aptitude in math & science, do not run from TJ because you are scared. The real world is full of competent and ambitious people and you can't take the easy way out for ever.

Stuy, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, Hunter and other elite high schools in NY are doing fine with 80% Asian Americans. TJ will be fine with or without white kids and they will continue to succeed. Meantime, we are dismissing a great educational opportunity for our kids by perpetuating this notion that TJ is for Asians and we should just let them have it and and then try to demean it since we can't have it.

Racism is for the poor and middle class so they would fight one another instead of aiming at the rich. The rich make deals with one another and stay on top, no matter where they come from.

My ansestors were not British. The came to America because, when they got kicked out of Central Europe, the US was the only country that would take them. I do not begrudge anyone who comes here and tries to succeed. What I don't like is when people come here and cheat to win.

Tell me what you think of Wall Street and the horde of lawyers, financiers and investment bankers?

What about Wall Street scammers?

I do not like the enron cheaters, or the WS scammers. Honesty is very important to me.

The recent Asian immigrants have it somewhat different than my ancestors had. 100's ago, when there was an era of jewsih immigration from central europe to the US, we came with no safety net (also). We came to a country that we could not communicate with, and much of the population hated us. The big difference was we had limited services to help us assimilate. There was no ESOL. And discrimination was legal. There were quotas keeping the number of jewish kids down in some colleges. But, at the public magnet schools (e.g., Bronx HS), me dominated. The work ethic continues today. You know what? most of the jewish kids I know are in AAP. TJ is not as big of a deal for us, because we know our high schools are good.

What is similar is that my people worked hard and studied. Not so much prepping for tests, but learning. They because Doctors, Lawyers, scientists, leaders in the entertainment field, leaders in business. Not because of entitlement, but because of hard work.

The same thing is true from the wave of Asian immigrants. They are smart and hard working. And they are becoming the Doctors, Lawyers, Scientists, and business leaders. That is good for our country.

The problem is that there is some misunderstanding of the American culture. In America, we have the resources to allow for second chances. We, as a society, decided (by action) that we want our small children to play, to grow and to be creative. We know that, in America, it does not matter where you start. And, if you screw up, you can start over. You can start college at 20 at a community college, transfer to a good school at 22, graduate at 24, Med school at 28 (or JD at 27, or PhD at 29). You will be fine. So, it does not matter how you do on an aptitude test at 7 yo. Some kids are late bloomers.

The white people let their children take stupid majors that do not challenge children like liberal arts.

Do you realize that your ancestors were let in to the US on. Preferential basis? Asians could not come in - it did not matter whether they were persecuted or not. Asians not allowed. The vast majority of the population ( including the new immigrants from Europe) was in favor of this immigration policy. Yes the immigrants worked hard - and the Jewish folks especially so and it is clear from their success.

But stop complaining - adjust to the new reality. You would rather sharpen your knives going up against the Asians in the US rather than losing in the global marketplace to Asians from Asia. You have to up your game rather than crib about entitlements of perceived unfair play.

How accepting are Asian countries of non-Asian residents?

There are people accusing Asian's of scamming and cheating and how those kids will grow up, but what's the crime rate of Asians in US?

I wonder which qualified applicant your token acceptance pushed aside. Many people work hard -- you do not get a free pass because of that. Americans are sadden by your racism after haven been so accepting of you.
