You do recognize that back then only certain immigrants of certain color were admitted to the US unfairly keeping a bunch of equally deserving people from different geographies out? Life is unfair for everyone. Some complain and others ( very likely your "ansestors" as well) just put in the extra effort to overcome the inequity.

Racism is in general pretty bad here in the Northeast. I grew up in the SF Bay Area. I have lived out here for a long time, and things have gotten better, but I am still often floored by the things that allegedly college educated people say here. People seem to have bought into stereotypes, and feel very comfortable making sweeping generalizations on the basis of race without allowing people the freedom to be individuals. It may be part of the larger issue of conformity, which is much greater out here than on the West Coast.

Many recent immigrants today are just putting in extra effort to overcome on-going inequity and because their performance is superior they have to listen to descendants of the unqualified accuse them of cheating.
