Most comments are too subtle for some people to understand why they're problematic, like the comment above about the play group. People tend not to realize when they're making assumptions, about race or anything else. That's why they're assumptions. We need to be open to having our assumptions challenged. If you really want to live in a post-racist world, put down your defenses and engage in a real dialogue.

It's painful when someone accuses you of racism or racial cluelessness. It's like you're being told you're ugly in some fundamental way. I know, because I'm white and I've been there. It's often embarrassing, even shameful, and goes against the core of what you believe about yourself. But if you're white and you find yourself in that situation, turn into it and become more informed. Then you'll be more like the person you think you are.

Stepping down from the soapbox now. . .

These are the posts that anger me and I dont understand. I could say the same thing to you. I wish AA people would put down their defenses and listen more. Why are you generalizing an entire race. Its absurd!

Wow...you've proven the pp's point. Rather than take offense and *get defensive* why not embrace the idea, if it applies to you?

Turning this into a "well, why don't you do it too" thing is juvenile, creates hostility and gets us nowhere.

You completely missed MY point. Thats on you not me.

No, I understand your point. I just don't see how it's conducive to having a conversation (especially when you don't even know if that pp is white or black).

I did not make that comment to the pp thinking they were black, white, etc. I made the comment because I agree with you that it is not conducive to start ANY open discussion calling out a particular race. That comment should have stated that everyone should stop and be more open minded. There was no point in calling out a specific race. Thats the point.

I am sorry but let me dissect your post for a moment.

What is your race? Please take the sentence I said I took offense to from the other pp and insert your race. You do not see how it would make someone upset? How is that comment appropriate? How is me stating that no race needs to be called out for being closed minded juvenile or creates hostility.

It seems like you are the hot headed one.

Please ANYONE on DCUM. Take the sentence "I wish __________ people were more open minded", insert your race and see how uncomfortable that makes you feel. And if you are fine with it please let me know.

I'm sorry, but your position creates hostility, not motivation to have an open dialogue. You are so focused on not being blamed, that you can't move past it and focus on the greater issue.

I am not the PP above you, but in response to your last sentence:

"I am white, and I wish other white people were more open-minded."

I am okay with it, given the context of this thread. Why is it NOT okay to say you wish white/black/etc people would be more open-minded when talking about race? Why are you so defensive? Why do you assume I am "hot-headed?

I am truly trying to understand how trying to have an open dialogue with a neutral reaction by not calling out ANY race is hostile? I don’t get it at all. I believe that calling out a specific race creates more hostility.

Why do you assume I am defensive. I am stating my opinion and a string one at that. Just because I do not agree with you does not make me defensive. Also based on your WOW reaction and the wording you used that’s why I believe you were acting hot headed.

I give up with you. You are not here to learn, you're here to take offense. So far, we've discussed nothing of substance further proving how taking positions like yours is not helpful in any way.

BTW, "wow" was an express of amazement (at the irony), not anger.

You really like generalizations about people and groups. You need to take your own advice. I have not taken offense and it just shows your lack of open mindedness when reading my posts.

EVERYONE needs to step back and take a look at their own racial prejudices and assumptions. I'm neither black nor white, and while I know what it's like to experience prejudice and discrimination (that turned physical, unfortunately), I still have to actively monitor myself against making assumptions about certain people in certain situations.

I am not the PP above you, but in response to your last sentence:

"I am white, and I wish other white people were more open-minded."

This is obviously not what the PP asked. S/he asked how comfortable each of us would feel about unqualified statements such as:

I wish white people were more open minded
I wish black people were more open minded
I wish overweight people were more open minded
I wish underweight people were more open minded
I wish American people were more open minded
I wish foreign people were more open minded

...you get the idea

Yes, thank you for the examples. And you can add heterosexual and homosexual. The point I was trying to make is there.

I'm Black and I don't care if there are other Black people on this site. I'm very comfortable going back and forth with the subtle racists posts on this site. In fact, I enjoy it.
