Thanks for doing that, saves us having to create new email addys. I will be writing you by lunchtime. Merci!

Me too. |
Wow, that's short-sighted and exclusionary. You mean all the OOB families that attend Garrison and spend and therefore spend a significant amount of time in the Logan Circle aren't approved to participate in that group? |
Sorry. Posted this on the wrong thread. |
As a Francophile with limited Spanish, I would be very interested in that as well, although my daughter is now nearly three. I assume it's too late for us? |

Hi! I just emailed mjjasm@gmail.com
Really would like to try to be a part of a French language charter. Realistically, it will take a while to actually get going (if it can). But, as the research says, exposure before puberty is key. My friend from West Africa has a nephew who is nine. He suddenly was thrust in to the immersion environment due to a family situation and is completely fluent in French now. He did not speak any French (mom said he preferred English and so she just spoke to him in English), but now he is completely fluent. It can happen even if the child does not start from birth. Anyways, I'm excited to join anyone who is really interested. |
I'm one of the ones who started this conversation, my daughter is already 4 so it's definitely too late for her, but this isn't just about our own kids. This is about anyone interested in discussing getting a French immersion charter going (because, let's be clear, this is the very very beginning of this conversation, just to explore the idea and see what kind of energy there is for taking next steps). I would be participating as someone for whom most likely my child will not benefit from this, since I have every intention of having her settled in a school we feel great about by K at the latest (hopefully this year!). But I believe DC needs more choices, and I speak French and love the Mundo Verde model of a green school, so I would be happy to be part of helping that get going. Anyone who's interested in having this conversation further, please email mjjasm@gmail.com . She has been kind enough to offer to organize the initial contacts and get us talking offline. If you think it's a great idea/concept for your child in the future but do not have an interest in actually helping the school become a reality, no need to email right now, just stay tuned to see if anything actually happens.

For those of us interested in Haricots Verts but with kids who are already in PS or PK and, realistically, we'd want them to be settled in a great school well before it's even possible we'd ever get this school going, another thing to think about is the lack of great middle school options. The few great middle schools in DC are all overfed, and even though DCI sounds like it will be great and there may be many new feeder schools over the years, there is no question that demand will still outweigh supply for middle school.
The more I think about the idea of getting a school going, my demanding full time work schedule, and parenting, I gotta be honest: it would be hard for me to really dive into this if I thought my children would not really benefit. Which is why I'm also raising the idea that maybe it's also worth thinking about/looking at founding a French or language oriented, green middle school, not to compete with DCI but basically to be inspired by it and maybe take that in a different direction, maybe more specialized or dually focused on green and language? It's all just ideas, but as I printed up the "Application Guidelines for New Charter Schools Start Ups" that our lovely Contact Coordinator is already sending out to people in this thread (we already have titles! ), I'm really thinking that if I'm going to seriously think about doing this work, I'll need a personal stake in it, which for me will mean middle school, not elementary. And there is no question that there is a dearth of great middle school options that are not already over-subscribed.
Just throwing this out there. This idea began as an elementary school idea, and if that is where the group wants to keep it, I totally understand. But just thought I'd throw the idea out there, while we're brainstorming...
No matter what, DC can't go wrong with more great school options. It would be an honor to be part of helping that be improved by one more school. |
| Not to be snarky but maybe you should start your own thread so it can be easily followed and more efficient and let this one go back to the OP. |
+1 I agree that I want all kids to have more options, mine included! I'm doing some digging to make sure, but there's no reason why a start-up has to be focused on pre-k. We can figure out when the school could likely open (say two or three years from now or whatever) and have the flagship grade be the grade where our kids will be. For mine, it'll like be 1st. We would have a flagship K and 1st or 1st and 2nd. However, if that's not reasonable, I'm all for making it higher grades. Maybe a middle school with an IB focus would be great. I'm hopeful for the DCI as well, but we can't all put our eggs in that basket, especially because we (at least I) don't have access to a feeder. I'm praying for Stokes next week, but will probably be shut out again. Anyways, I'm excited about this thread and hope, if nothing else, we can get the information that we need to see if this really is doable. Haricot Verts- here we come! |
Great minds think alike... I posted the new thread when you were posting this. Haricots Verts people, let's take this conversation to our own thread. Everyone else, back to our regularly scheduled "Where are you giving up your PS-3 slot?" conversation! |
| IT for CM |
I have to make this decision too, but was leaning the opposite way. I like Cap City's curriculum, diversity, parental involvement. I like Powell's leadership & curicullum plus better location for me and upcoming renovations will make it a beautiful school. Leaning toward Cap City because I think it is a longer term option, but that really depends on what happens at Powell over next two years. Also have DC Bilingual in the mix, but think that it is on par with Powell, so would take Powell. Going to lots of open houses next week! |
| Most likely at Appletree (CH) and DC Bilingual. |
