HGC Scores

That's below the median of the 50 kids accepted, not the 500 who took the test.

This not true. 500 kids did not take the test for entrance into CSES-HGC that exhibited the highest median score acceptance rates in the County. Other posters from other centers have confirmed the median values for the other HGC-centers and their cluster elementary schools draw. It seems the poster is stating for the draw pool taking the test for CSES-HGC entrance the test is too easy (median scores very high for accepted students).

During orientation last year the principal said there was close to 500 applicants at the HGC my daughter go to. I would have guessed that it would be similar at other centers but perhaps not.

I do not know the figures for this year and per HGC cluster. But, from previous years 270 or half your number is about right. Multiply that average of 270 by 8 for total number of applicants in the County applying to all the Centers.

This year the number will likely be much higher because of the general disastifaction with curriculum 2.0, the further dumming down of the curriculum and holding kids back who could advance easily in the name of closing the achievement gap(s) and this decade there may be 2 achievement gaps clearly emerging.

Ok principal at one school says they had 500 apps and you insist the number is about half. How do you know?????

Our HGC draws from 20 schools. Some of the schools have more than 100 3rd graders. At our school my child reported that at least 30 kids took the test. So I don't think 500 is high. But half that sounds very low.

I can understand posters who are upset that their child wasn't admitted, but somebody on here wants to insist that the process is fraudulent. That seems unlikely, especially based on the scores for admitted kids that have been posted. They don't have enough slots for all eligible students, that's all.

The private school kids are tested separately and there were at least 50-75 kids taking the test at our session so I have no problem believing that 500 MCPS kids applied for each of the centers.

Do any parents give their kids practice tests?

I did a quick count. My local HGC is Barnsley. My kid is in 1st grade. So I looked at the K numbers (because the data is from last year). There are 2124 kids in all the feeder schools who are currently in first grade. If 500 kids were to take the test (in another 2 years) that would mean that ~23% of her contemporaries would believe they have a shot at being in that top 2-3%. That doesn't seem like it should be the case. So 500 definitely seems too high. But who knows, it might just confirm what we all know - that our kids are all geniuses!

PP here - Oh, and I forgot that I have no way to count private school kids!

At that age, being top 10% or top 25% may not feel that different? Being top 2 or 3 should feel different though. But kids and parents need to try. I can believe the 500 number.

I wonder how much depends on hold good the local schools are? I'd guess that if the local school is really good you might not feel the need to apply and vice versa. Also, how many people really have an idea how their kids rank compared to other kids? For many this would probably be the first time their child took an aptitude test that was directly compared to other local kids.

It is very easy to apply and I'm sure many parents just want to see how their kid does. No obligation to attend.

+1
It costs nothing to take the test, no reason not to if you feel your kid has a shot. Furthermore, I read somewhere (probably on this site) that 40% of kids in 2nd grade were classified as "gifted" based on the testing MCPS administers in 2nd grade. So why would a pp think that it's unlikely that 23% might have taken the HGC test? Again, nothing really to lose.

Maybe information about how many kids applied will be made available at the open houses. If not, you can probably just call DCCAPS and ask.

My child told me that, during the GT test, a boy cried out "I can't do it!" and left the room. Obviously, some parents are pushing their kids to the edge..
