My kid's scores were V- 112, Q-117, and NV-128

Number of correct answers/total:

V-49/65, Q-49/60, NV-60/65

4 ES's on report cards

My kid didn't get accepted and has been crying eyes out the past two days. I had no idea it meant so much to my child. It's heartbreaking to see.

Geez, that's terrible. Sorry to hear that.

Sorry to hear your child is upset. We actually didn't tell our child about the application or what the exam was for and apparently the school didn't say what they were being tested for when they pulled them out for the exam. DC was accepted but we would have hated seeing our child get that upset if that had not been the case.

How did your child know about it? Does he/she have lots of friends who were accpted?

My kid heard other kids talking at school.

Hi --fellow CCES non-admitted parent here. Curious if your child was on the accelerated math track at RHPS and then pulled off into regular 3rd grade math? If so, how do you feel about next year at CCES? I'm concerned that only the CCES HGC kids will have access to the compacted 4/5/6 math that is being proposed by the county. It's not clear yet how this will turn out.

I'm not sure if your question was directed to me, I posted above, but I'll answer. My kid would have been accelerated this year were it not for 2.0. I'm not sure how I feel about it. This year has been a very good school year with no reported boredom as was the case since kindergarten. This could be due to the fact, though, that my child has a very engaging, out of the ordinary teacher this year. I do worry about the boredom factor coming back into play next year with the 4th grade teachers in my school, about whom I don't know much. I would hate to see my child left in the dust by equally smart children who are able to get more opportunities in the HGC Center, if that is indeed the case.

I feel your pain -- my DC reacted much the same way two years ago (not accepted or waitlisted for HGC even though DC achieved the median score in one category, was slightly above the median score in another, and was way above the median score in the third, and also had strong grades and teacher recommendations). After crying it out (because, at bottom, it never feels good to be rejected especially when your BFFs or friend(en)emies are getting high-fives for their acceptance), my DC got back to business and ended up being accepted at both Eastern and Takoma Park (and because of the HGC experience, didn't run around school broadcasting this news). I hope that your DC is feeling better soon and, since Spring Break is here, that all the talk of "who's in, who's out" will have died out by the time classes resume.

I really wish they had a way to tell the kids to be more considerate.
Maybe they shouldn't release their scores....
We're coming from a private so it is easy to keep it a secret.

You and other posters have been very kind. I appreciate it. It's a life lesson to learn and grow from.

The tale of a child who ended up getting accepted at middle school magnets after not getting into an HGC is encouraging. My child was rejected from the HGC at her home school and FIVE of her best friends from the home school were accepted. Mine is now almost guaranteed not to have a good friend in her class next year, and thinks all of her friends are smarter than her. Of course the kids are talking about it, and mine even said that she didn't want to not talk about it because she wanted to congratulate her friends. But there have been lots of tears around here the past few days.
