HGC Scores

Anonymous
Every year MCPS sends out a letter with the HGC applications that provides the applicant's test scores and the median test scores for the accepted pool of applicants. Unfortunately, this isn't very much data. "Median" means only that 50% scored above that mark and 50% below. But, it tells nothing about how far above or below. It also doesn't reveal very much about whether accepted applicants had to score above in one or more categories.

In the interest of transparency it would be helpful to know more information about scores and other known, quantifiable, aspects of the application packet. Can people post three things? 1) accepted/not accepted 2) test scores and 3) grades -- any ES's?

I'll go first --

DC not accepted, scores were V119, Q117 and NV 110. No ES's on report card.

My accepted DCs scores were 124, 128 and 133.

As a person whose child did not apply to HGC, would someone post the median scores?

How about the median accepted scores for various HGC's?

The median SAS (standard age score) of Selected Students: V132, Q127, NV127

The letter says, "The Standard Age Score compares the rate and level of cognitive development of your child with other students in the same age group."

No other information about the test in the letter -- no test name, no information about what your child's test score is in terms of national percentiles on (whatever) test.

The median scores differ by center.

Sorry, I should have said that these "median SAS of Selected Students" came from an application to the Chevy Chase HGC. It's not clear whether this median is only for those selected to the CCES HGC or whether it's the median for all students across MCPS who are accepted to the HGC. Can anyone from a different HGC confirm whether they have the same or different median scores in their letter?

Numbers were different for Pine Crest/Oak View but I don't have the letter with me. I remember NV was 122.

Chevy Chase Median SAS of selected students:
Verbal 132 Quantitative 127 and Nonverbal 127

My kid's scores were V- 112, Q-117, and NV-128

Number of correct answers/total:

V-49/65, Q-49/60, NV-60/65

4 ES's on report cards

My kid didn't get accepted and has been crying eyes out the past two days. I had no idea it meant so much to my child. It's heartbreaking to see.

How did your child know about it? Does he/she have lots of friends who were accpted?
