SIL is silently mooching off our Netflix streaming account

Or she thinks OP isn't a tight ass (which she clearly is).

You're not obligated to allow her to use it, especially if she hasn't asked. If it bothers you that much, just change the password and stop worrying about it.

I think this is the issue. There is conflict there so anything the SIL does is going to irritate OP. If I found out that I could share Netflix with my bro/SIL within the rules of Netflix an without it disrupting my service or costing me extra, I would have called them up an said, hey, remember we watched Netflix at your place? feel free to keep using it, you are allowed to share accounts within families.

So to be mad that someone is getting something for free...that's just bad blood.

change the password.

If she says anything, say you kept having problems with movies disappearing, so you called Netflix and they told you it looked like your account had been compromised and suggested you change it. Then ask her if she's been having problems with her account too.

It appears that the SIL is the "tight ass" in this scenario.

I agree, but it feels different to be generous with people who are also generous than it does to be generous with people who are cheap and will nickel and dime you any chance they get.

People who are cheap generally have no money.
Why is op involved? This is her husbands sister. He should handle this

There's nothing to handle. OP can just change the password and the whole thing is over. If SIL wants to use their Netflix, she can ask them, or she could just pay for her own Netflix. It's less than $10 a month for just streaming.

It is bothering you so just change the password.

Tailor your response depending on how she brings it up if at all.

If she asks nicely, then why not share? If she is all entitled, tell her no.

Otherwise, who cares?

This.

I mean, where is the harm here?

Here's part of the Netflix end user agreement - section 2.3 seems to cover this, although I admit I haven't read the whole thing, and 2.1 is at least a little ambiguous.

Permitted Use/Restrictions2.1Grant of Limited License. Netflix grants you (which, for purposes of this License Agreement, shall include members of your immediate household for whom you will be responsible hereunder and users of the Netflix ready device with which you are accessing the Netflix service and for whom you will be responsible hereunder) a non-exclusive, limited, personal and nontransferable license, subject to and conditioned on your compliance with the restrictions set forth in this License Agreement, to install and use the Software, in object code form only, provided to you by or on behalf of Netflix in connection with your use of the Netflix service.
2.2The license grant above includes the right to use documentation accompanying the Software for the sole purpose of using the Netflix service and the right to make one (1) backup copy of the Software, provided that (i) the Software is installed on only the number of Netflix ready devices authorized by Netflix (which number shall be six (6) Netflix ready devices unless otherwise agreed or modified in writing by Netflix); (ii) the Software may NOT be modified; (iii) all copyright notices are maintained on the Software; and (iv) you agree to be bound by all the terms of this License Agreement.
2.3The Software is only for your own personal, non-commercial use and not for use in the operation of a business or service bureau, for profit or for the benefit or any other person or entity.
2.4As a condition of the limited license for the Software granted to you in this License Agreement, except as and only to the extent expressly permitted in this License Agreement or by applicable law which cannot be waived by this License Agreement, you may NOT:
a.publish, display, disclose, rent, lease, modify, loan, distribute or create derivative works based on the Software or any part thereof;
b.copy, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble, translate, adapt or otherwise reduce the Software to human readable form;
c.attempt to create the source code from the object code of the Software;
d.transmit or make the Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers or Netflix ready devices at the same time;
e.make any third-party software contained in the Software a standalone product;
f.take any action that will infringe on the intellectual property or other proprietary rights of Netflix or any third party software provider;
g.sublicense or assign the Software;
h.view any movies & TV shows provided by Netflix or its suppliers anywhere other than within the country or location authorized by Netflix ("Territory"); and
i.instantly watch movies & TV shows outside of the Territory, and Netflix may use technologies to verify your compliance.
2.5If you "uninstall" the Software, you will no longer be able to use the Software to view movies & TV shows on that Netflix ready device.
2.6No ownership rights. You have no ownership rights in any Software. Rather, you have a limited license to use the Software as long as this License Agreement remains in effect. Ownership of the Software and all intellectual property rights therein shall remain at all times with Netflix and/or its licensors. Any other use of the Software by any other person, business, corporation, government or any other entity is strictly prohibited and is a violation of this License Agreement.

Thanks for proving the point.

You can choose to try your best to live an honorable life in all ways, big or small. Or not. We know where the SIL stands. And you're right next to her.

I change my passwords on online accounts every once in a while anyway. I would just change the password.
