SIL is silently mooching off our Netflix streaming account

Um hello? Why on earth wouldn't you just change the password? This is silly.

You realize SIL is in effect stealing from Netflix. This type of behavior ultimately raises prices for everyone else. Netflix is not a free service.

OP, what's your response going to be if your SIL just calls you up, and says something like this: "Hey, remember how I was visiting recently and used your Netflix account? Your nieces really loved it. Since you've already got a Netflix account, do you mind if I use your account from time to time to show my kids some movies? I checked the Netflix rules, and they say you're allowed to share access with family members, so it shouldn't cause you any problem."

Alternatively, what if she just calls your DH (her brother), and asks the same favor?

Change the password. If she has the balls to ask about it, say your Netflix has been streaming very slowly so you contacted Netflix and they suggested you make your password stronger to prevent other users from logging in. Play dumb about the fact that she was actually the one doing it.

It's easy to track which IP addresses are using a given account and to flag accounts with more than say 4-5 IP addresses in more than a 2-3 week timeframe. Ditto for simultaneous logins.

9:07 again. It just seems you might make this into a bigger deal than it needs to be if you start retaliating, especially if you do it in a passive aggressive way (by changing the password, for example). If you're really bothered by it, just call your SIL directly and ask her to stop.

Not OP but I have a feeling half the issue is that her SIL didn't even bother to ask. She just did it. If she asks nicely OP may say yes. Or OP can say it was interfering with her streaming to have multiple users streaming at the same time. Then for Christmas OP can give this family Netflix.

If it's allowed by Netflix rules, I don't see why you wouldn't be willing to share, but she certainly should have asked first. You seem very vindictive and bitter (as do many people on DCUM).

How old are her kids? 4 or even 3 yo can figure out how to turn on videos on Netflix having seen others do it. You said it was just kids' videos. Just change the password if it bothers you.

Because she didn't ask! If it's not that big a deal then why can't the SIL pay her own 5 or 10 dollars or whatever it is?

This would make it worse in my opinion because it makes it into a confrontation.

Why is changing the password to OP's account "passive aggressive?" It's HER account!!!

Right, I might say that you should be direct with your SIL if she had directly asked you if she could use it to begin with, but in this case it's fine to just change the password. I wouldn't want someone else using my Netflix account because I like my "recently watched" to be where I left them, not squeezed out by what someone else is watching. Also, sometimes you'll get blocked from watching a movie if someone else is using your account to watch a movie at the same time.

Change the password. If she asks, just say you noticed that it seemed like someone was improperly using the account so you changed the password to protect the account. Then if she says it was her and wants the new password, tell her, "Oh, it was you? Well, I'm not comfortable about going against their policies and don't want to jeopardize our account. You should get one for yourselves. It's not expensive."

It's family. I'm assuming your nieces and nephews are benefiting from this so who the eff cares?

Wow...people get pissed about the smallest things.
