baby name Salem-am I crazy?

Yes. Do not do this to a child.

Sounds like Salem witch trials or a misspelled version of a Muslim name.

I have a colleague named Salem, and I think it's a great name.

Name chosen by a Teen Mom.

When "her age" becomes 8th grade English class, they are going to be thinking of nothing else.

We named our son Saylem. And love it. People will get over the Salem witch trials crap. When he is older nobody will no what those are anyways. Any name you pick someone will say it reminds them of something. We like it cause it means peace. We changed the spelling to be different.

First thought when I read this was the cigarettes my mother's friend used to smoke. Second thought was witch trials.
Pleeeease, come up with a better name!

I hope you're wrong that, in the near future, "nobody will no " what the Salem witch trials are. The Scarlet Letter was written more than 150 years ago. There's no reason to think people will stop reading that -- and hence know about the Salem Witch trials -- anytime soon.

It's a cat's name, not a child's name. It was the cat's name on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. It would be like naming your kid Rover, IMO.

There's a Salem in my children's preschool. So I vote yes. The family has a a North Carolina connection, so maybe that's where the name came from.

Selma?

Selma and Salem, both sites of civil rights abuse!

At least Salem has a nice meaning, and a pleasant sound.

The Arabic is pronounced "say-leem" though, not "say-lem". It is very common for Muslims though, but as a male name.
