It's an alternative spelling for the more common Salim or Saleem spelling (pronounced Sah-LEEM, means "compassionate"). Although Salaam (pronounced sah-LAHM and meaning "peace") is an Arabic word, I've never known that to be a name. (Although I'm a Muslim convert, so I may just not have come across it yet.) FWIW, I immediately thought of the witch trials, too. I think SAY-lem is a pretty name in theory, but I cannot get over that connotation. |
| No, absolutely not. It is a horrible name, especially for a girl. What is up with the trend especially of giving girls ugly boyish sounding names? There are so many beautiful girls' names out there. And I immediately think of the witch trials. Not a good association. |
Nope, pronounced SA-lem or SA-leem. SalAAM is a greeting but not a name. |
really, you don't think of Winston Churchill? |
| I think variations of this are common in arabic- why not a different spelling/pronunciation? Salim, Saleem, etc. |
|
pronounced like salem, oregon?
if so, i like it. different, but in a good way. |
| Another one who thinks Witch Trials and cigarettes. Really, there are several not-nice associations with this name, I would just call it unfortunate and move on to other names. |
| I love it, but only for a girl. |
Seriously. I would think of Winston Churchill about 99 times before I thought of anything else. In fact, I'd never associate it with a Nascar race because I never even knew before reading this that it even WAS a Nascar race! |

im naming my daugher salem and i think its awesome and beautiful. you people need to get over the witch thing. Children her age are not going to be thinking of that.
|
| It's my cat's name, so I like it. Not sure for a kid though. |
This. |
Salem is also a cigarette. |
It is a great name for a cat! |
