My grandparents, and all of our parents or grandparents lived during the Great Depression. Guess what? They absolutely went without food rather than steal. Or everyone in the family worked when they could to afford food.

How do you know people didn't steal during the depression? I can't imagine if my Grandparents did steal that it would be something they would talk about over cocktails before Thanksgiving dinner. People do what they have to do, and then when times are better they try to forget the bad times.

I am NOT saying that the Filene's mom is in the same situation, but your statement is seriously weird.
