Smoking question

Anonymous
Please post the reference where someone defended a smokers' right to throw things on the ground. There are posts where people asked WHY they did it and posts where smokers explain why they do it, but I don't see anything here where people are defending their rights to litter . . . I must be missing it. Please post for me.

I'm sure you recycle everything Miss Perfect. And you bike to work? Would you like to compare environmental footprints? Let's go -

What do you drive?

What kind of diapers do you use? It should be against the law to use anything but cloth diapers because it takes centuries for the disposable to disinigrate in landfills.

I did use cloth diapers. You?

Yes, I certainly did and I cringe everytime I see disposable diapers and think of the world we are leaving our children.

And being disingenuous. Your first post is riddled with sarcasm and righteousness.

So either you are having one of your Sybill says, or you are really just that stupid.

!!!lol!!! You are my hero!!!!

I live in California and I REALLY resent the disgusting smokers who:
1) throw butts out the car in f*cking July and then wonder why there's so many wildfires
2) Who come to the beach and stink it up for the rest of us or even grosser, leave butts in the sand for us to step on- Thankfully many beaches are now smoke free
3) Drive with their windows open in bumper to bumper traffic so the rest of us have to smell their toxic smoke.

It's totally disgusting, it ages you and gives you horrible breath!

9:18, 10:56, 16:43. Particularly 16:43, who would notice me giving her the stink-eye for smoking and throw her butt down just to...I don't know, prove me right?

I read those posts you cited . . . and they aren't "Defending their right" to litter. They are explaining why they do this, in response to a DIRECT QUESTION about why they do this. I think this debate is in your head.

If someone came up to you and said "Why are you drinking coffee, caffeine is unhealthy!" and you said "Because it helps me wake up." and then a third person jumped in and proceeded to scream and rant and rave at you because you are soooooooo disgusting and unhealthy and you are defending people's right to use drugs . . . that would be comparable to what you are doing here.

If you don't see that, then you are really thick.

For those who keep comparing smoking with drinking coffee or drinking alcohol or overeating let's remember -- with the possible exception of health care costs -- none of these are habits that impact other people the way smoking does, which is probably why you see more anger directed at smokers. When someone stands next to me all evening drinking beer, guzzling espresso, or eating Krispy Kremes, I don't go home smelling like an ashtray or worrying about the health effects. I think we all understand the concept of addiction but it's when your inability to address your addiction impacts other people's quality of life that they get angry.

And no, this is not the "angry poster".

Why don't you attack tobacco at its core--tobacco growers, companies and the tobacco lobby that gives hundreds of thousand dollars to members of Congress to keep their subsidies. Mitch McConnel, Senate Minority Leader from KY is a good start. Cigarette/tobacco companies have to make a profit, and as their product ultimately kills, then they have to get new customers every day. Vent your anger where it will do the most good.

So is Angry Poster's real beef that a smoker actually answered OP's question? Or is she mad OP asked the question in the first place?

You may not have liked the answer, but they were answering a direct question.

Angry Poster(s) are even tempered because they are angry about everything. I have a sister who is the same and we haven't spoken in years.

No question that they share some of the blame.

Anonymous wrote:Not "angry lady" here, but get real OP. You asked a question about what is a legitimately annoying, even anger-inducing, habit.

I don't care what your reasons, there is no excuse for dumping your cigarettes on the ground. Fire hazard? Spit on it, quench it, drop the tip.

And flicking cigarettes from the car because you don't want to get your ashtray dirty? Oh god that alone makes me angry. It is completely self-absorbed and harmful behavior. People do this with food trash, too. Don't want to get their cars dirty, so they leave their wrappers etc. by the side of the car in a parking lot then drive away.

Cigarettes or trash, it pisses me off that some people think it is okay to trash the environment because they are too lazy to walk to a trashcan or expect someone else to clean it up.

I don't give a crap if smokers smoke, as long as it doesn't affect me. But if I have to wade past a toxic cloud to get to my classroom, or look at lipstick stained disgusting butts all over the ground, or have one hit my car and spark as I'm minding my own business, anger is an appropriate response.

So OP--stop trying to dictate how people respond. And your little throwaway line about anger more harmful than smoking? Laughable on its face, both in content and purpose.

Part of your problem is that this induces anger in you. Irritation? Understandable reaction. Anger? You have issues.

Just out of curiosity, where are you standing next to a smoker all night and why don't you just move? Just walk away. It's not like smoking indoors at a restaurant or bar is legal in DC, so you must be outside. Seriously, why don't you just walk away?

Not the same person, and can't figure out why I feel compelled to [continue to] respond to bullies.

I, for one, did not bully any smokers. I pointed out that some behavior is outrageous. Behavior. Not the person. And you really should read the sarcasm and subtle nastiness in your OP. Crazy lady.

15:00 confirming that myself and 15:20 are not the same.

I don't know why it's so hard to believe that multiple people find smoking to be disgusting. I also love the deflection into calling us angry and insane and unstable and whatever else you want to believe that we are. Deflect from the fact that there is no good reason to smoke, no good reason to start, no good reason not to at least try to quit (kudos to those who have, because I cannot imagine how difficult it is), and no good reason to fling your butts onto the ground as though they will magically vaporize into the ether. Secondhand smoke pollutes the environment, and no matter how much you want to believe that your smoking doesn't make you stink, it does.

Of course you all will go ahead and deflect again, saying I must be perfect and my shit doesn't stink and all that. I don't claim to be perfect, but I do have enough common sense to not smoke. It doesn't take a genius to understand how bad it is and not do it.

There was also no good reason to drink too much espresso, too much wine, and have too much sex with the hot local guy on the motorcycle on my 3-week trip to Italy. But I'm not sorry.
