Total Shut Out---any suggestions of schools to apply in Washington, DC (independent school)

This happened to us -- we did Montessori. Try Auguste Montessori -- the head gets kids into really nice schools after that. Two original kids went Ivy (out of a class of 4 kids!)

You have WIS and CHDS which I see as 2 very different schools. I think if you are able to focus a bit you might get some better insight from people. Also are you looking at charters?
Not really...WIS was our 1st choice, but secondary languages/language immersion is very high on our list. CHDS offers 1/2 year Spanish, 1/2 year French instruction. I applied at LAMB as well. So, my focus Is not really scattered.

the french maternal school in georgetown is wonderful and often takes students past the application deadline. just call the head of the school peggy pacot. their program is 2, 3 and 4 year olds and if language immersion is important to you, well that's what they offer.

thanks for the information...I will add this school to my list. I am quite hopeful after contacting several of the suggestions listed on this thread. I will call FMS tomorrow!

So...
What happened?

I don;t think any school wants a room full of off the chart kids. Plus 99.9% WPPSI does not mean the child is socially adept, emotionally intelligent, makes good judgments, etc. There is so much more than intellectual capability in play here. As in life so in admissions.

Try WES.

I don't get the feeling that WES is good fallback plan. Our PK, 98ile% boy was rejected. I have heard only lovely things about WES and I doubt they would have rejected kids if they weren't already full.

We've now been shut out two years in a row (PK and K) - and here's the Catch 22 we found ourselves in this year: We applied to a wider range of schools including "safer" schools, i.e. non-Big 5. 99+ kid, great recs, great playdates. Not surprisingly still got WLed as the "Big 3" schools - but also at the other schools. The reason I've heard from the ADs at the non-Big 3 schools - essentially: "you were so well qualified, we figured you wouldn't come if we accepted you." So what's a person to do? Chances of getting into one of the Big 3 are very small because of sheer numbers. Apply to a smaller school and they don't accept you because they figure, you don't really want them. So it's public school for us.

I'm sorry to hear that. The reasoning seems ridiculous. Our oldest was shut out for K and we sent everyone to public school. Now all four of my children are at Sidwell. DC public was a great start for them, and I know Sidwell accepts mostly public school kids at he middle and high school level.

If you or your spouse work outside DC you could try some of the MD or VA schools. Franklin has a school in Rockville which is a long commute if you work in DC but if one of you work in Bethesda, Rockville or someplace else in MD then it would not be that bad.

14:16 poster here - thanks PP. That makes me feel better. Glad it worked out for you and I'm sure it will for us as well. We're fortunate to have a good DCPS as back up.

This may sound a little out of the box, but there is a new school that opened last August in Montgomery County called Feynman School. It caters to bright kids and has part-immersion Spanish. This year, only one of the original pre-kindergarteners applied out, and got accepted by every school applied to, including GDS and Maret for K. The same dc had been "shut out" by the usual suspects last year for pre-K despite being bilingual and having a high WPPSI, and applied to the new school over the summer. It's pretty far out though, one town past Potomac. Not sure if something like this could work for a year or two.

Stone Ridge in Bethesda is always taking applications.
