There are well-off, ass-hat kids at all these schools with checked out bro-y parents who think this is all normal and have low expectations. Plenty of kids and families opt out of it and ignore this whole scene. The majority of kids. They are at Yorktown and W-L and private schools and in fact the crowds mix often.

This was jumbled. What I mean here is the party crowd is not unique to Yorktown, incidents of fighting and vandalism are not unique to Yorktown. These fools vandalize each other's field back and forth to the point the County has to leave the lights on at the fields overnight before big games.

The W-L vs Yorktown rivalry and the vandalism that goes with that extends back to before any of us were born. It's probably no different than the Langley vs. McLean rivalry. Not defending the behavior, but it's probably tamer than back in the 60s or 70s.

However, FCPS parents are shocked and saddened by the behavior of certain Yorktown students. Typically it's always a core group of Yorktown students at away games for example like at McLean HS. On the other hand, W-L has won the VHSL Sportsmanship and Ethics award which includes student behavior off the field.

It was just public comments. There is no back and forth. Some guy goes every single week with grievances.

It's a little different when it's a long-time former teacher saying YHS in tanking.

She's a former teacher, but more importantly, she should go to Duran and schedule a meeting instead of dropping shade at a school board meeting.

Honestly just seems like a whiny cowardly move to drop the shade publicly instead of try to fix it with central office first

I'd think it was a calculated decision that coming forth publicly with these observations would get more attention than trying to meet with Duran and then being completely ignored.

I was more just thinking kids are clearly drunk at their football games too. Seen it.

True, but I feel like a statement like this is different from the calendar guy. Shouldn’t they at least acknowledge this?

Well, it’s not the way public comments work. There is protocol.

No duh. I’m saying that this is a more serious issue and that they should do something about this instead of waving it off. I’m not saying that it needs to be done publicly, just that it should be acknowledged to the appropriate parties

My boys went to Yorktown. It wasn't perfect to say the least. However, couldn't imagine them going to W-L and/or Wakefield...for a public, it'll do.

I think YHS parents are in denial about both how their kids' bad behavior stands out locally and how YHS compares academically to W-L and Wakefield.

It's only a very small minority of Yorktown parents who see W-L and Wakefield as vastly inferior. Those same parents who think riding public transit (Metro) is beneath them or too "low class". There's a contingent of these parents at similar schools like Whitman HS in Bethesda, and they look down on neighboring B-CC.

a few months ago my daughter showed me a video in which a couple of kids were making fun of dr clark to his face. he just smiled uncomfortably and asked them to go back to class with a weak little smile on his face. I know disrespect is at a high in schools right now, but this video and some other stories my kids tell me are a bit too much. it doesn't seem like he has much of a backbone.

and no, before anybody comes at me, it wasn't my daughter or her friends making fun of him. it was other kids (that I didn't recognize) but the video made the rounds in the school

What’s wrong with WL and Wakefield?

How did a kid take a video? I thought phones were locked in pouches?

This behavior simply stems from the sense of entitlement among a group of well off kids. I don't see these attitudes changing any time soon.

What’s wrong with WL and Wakefield?

Nothing. It's a prejudice or "feeling of superiority" based on social and economic class/status. There are families who simply find W-L and Wakefield unacceptable.
