YHS

It was just public comments. There is no back and forth. Some guy goes every single week with grievances.

It's a little different when it's a long-time former teacher saying YHS in tanking.

She's a former teacher, but more importantly, she should go to Duran and schedule a meeting instead of dropping shade at a school board meeting.

Honestly just seems like a whiny cowardly move to drop the shade publicly instead of try to fix it with central office first

I'd think it was a calculated decision that coming forth publicly with these observations would get more attention than trying to meet with Duran and then being completely ignored.

He believes kids need more freedom. This freedom leads to high absenteeism, high rates of failing grades, and high rates of administrative pressure to pass these kids at the end of the year (we cannot have kids not graduating at YHS).

APS has always prioritized more student freedom as opposed to neighboring school districts like FCPS where student movement has always been very limited.

Student movement at our FCPS high school hasn't always been "very limited," but when kids came back post-Covid with their social development delayed and some feral behaviors, the administration cracked down on kids wandering the halls or trying to leave and come back during school hours.

You won't like the comment, but YHS kids engage in boorish behavior at sports events that would get kids confronted by an administrator at most schools. In fact, when some YHS kids (and obviously just talking about a small number) showed up at one event clearly impaired, and yelling loudly, they acted surprised that one of our administrators confronted them and made them leave. Not sure that would have happened at YHS.

That "boorish" behavior at sports events is nothing new at Yorktown and goes back many decades. It's a sense of entitlement really.
Games between Yorktown and archrival W-L now have separate fan entrances to prevent student behavior from getting out of hand.
That's more of a school culture thing that has been a "non-problem" at the school and thus never really dealt with.

I would bet good money she tried private avenues first. It’s classic to attack methods when you fear the message. Next you’ll be saying she want pretty or smart enough to deliver that speech.

Not sure whiny and cowardly describes publicly speaking and asking for an investigation into somebody who has a lot more power than you. She’s clearly burning bridges here and most people don’t do that if they are trying to hide and be cowardly

Absolutely true. YHS staff have tried to engage with central office staff for years to discuss the issues with leadership. Nothing has been done. People feel frustrated. Talk to any YHS teacher who has left to go to another school and ask them why they left. YHS is ignored - because test scores and graduation rates are good. But scratch below the surface and you would be shocked to see what is going on.

yep, attack the messenger and the way they delivered the message to deflect from the problem. classic move that APS uses.

The former teacher left YHS/ APS a year ago. Why does she care about the school if she's not teaching anymore? Seems like a strange thing to do a year after leaving teaching.
