They do look frumpy, especially on a non model. I am 5'4" and wear a size 2, so not big, and these make me look so wide. I prefer a straight or wide leg, and I think longer pants look more professional.

I’m fascinated that in the last five years, this style pants has become somewhat popular for young people, and then middle aged women have picked up the torch. They are made with synthetic fabrics, and while I appreciate today’s synthetics are popular and expensive and different, to a passing viewer they don’t look much different than cheap polys of the 1980s. And then the straight leg is just ….there. And most people wearing them aren’t skinny beautiful models, just regular women. The end result for me looks like what a low level office worker or a manager at target was wearing 20 years ago. Essentially cheap straight leg polyester pants. I don’t know how this has rebranded to UMC office wear.

Yup, they resemble the polyester pants from KMart or Sears of the 80's that clerical office women wore.

I mostly prefer linen but will wear cotton/poly blends.

Quince makes an Athleta dupe that I love. Performance tech pants. Looks like they only have them in black now. They had other colors last spring, maybe they will bring back more.

100% it's just marketing and the rise of "influencers". We should all go back to buying natural fibers that last longer. I'd rather spend $300 on a pair of cotton, linen, or even lightweight wool pants that will last for years than on polyesters that will only last one year. I still have and regularly wear lined wool pants from 10 years ago. I guarantee you won't be wearing your Ruti pants even next year.

I’m the pp you’re responding to and tbh it’s not the synthetic ness that bothers me about the pants, by itself. I actually think a lot of today’s synthetics has remarkable staying power and can look “new” for years longer than cotton. What looks dumb about these pants is that, historically, a straight leg polyester pants with no obvious style factor….was the opposite of stylish. As another poster said, this was low level sears poor person wear. I don’t understand the rebranding to UMC.

It sounds like you are mad about other women being thinner than you are. It's okay if these pants don't work for your body, but you don't have to put down people who wear them.

I truly am curious about what work you do that you can get away with wearing these. I'll admit they look comfortable, but I could not wear anything like this to my workplace. I absolutely do not work for Deloitte, nor am I a creative. I work for a tech company that remains business casual.

You just wear them with something like a tee, cropped cardigan and mary jane flats. Not that hard.

I wore them to work yesterday with a silk camisole, a cropped blazer, and ballet flats. I am an attorney and work in senior leadership on a nonprofit. They are perfectly appropriate for my work.
