Walter seems to be making a comeback! It was my grandfather's name and also my father - although my father went by his middle name. In any case, I always think of my grandfather when I hear that name - a cranky old man who yelled for us to watch out for his diabetic-abscessed toe every time we'd run by his chair.

Protagonist in Franzen's new novel, Freedom.

Girls: Cora (is this making a comeback now???), Anna, May, Emily, June, Sabine, Miriam, Elena, Sophie, Maura.

Boys: Jonah, Canon (family name), Peter, Noah, Ben. (Just realized these are mostly Biblical names).

Cora is making a teeny tiny comeback. It will never be as popular as Anna or Emily. I'll be shocked if it cracks the top 100. Cora has gone from # 482 in 2000 to # 303 in 2009.

Naming your child Piper is like naming your child Dick - you are setting them up for a lifetime of ridicule.

I loooove the name Soren for a little boy. I'm originally from midwest where everyone has norwegian roots, and it isn't an uncommon name there.

Where in the Midwest? Native Minnesotan here and the only Soren I have ever met would be about 110 years old now.

Minnesota! I'm from northern Minnesota, but most of the Sorens I know are from the southern part of the state, northern Iowa, and southern Wisconsin. When I read the alumni magazine from my college (northern Iowa), there is at least a half dozen Soren's listed every quarter.

Ohh, you're talking little baby Sorens. I was thinking adults - not the under 5 crowd. I imagine many of the little Sorens are being named after great-grandpa Soren.

Ohmigod..both my boys have very distinctive scandnavian MIDDLE names...my DH wanted them as first, but I persuased him to go middle with him. I thought I was the only one around here who had heard of "Soren'...he wants it for his third boy....which is not going to happen (the third child or the name!).

My name is Lori and this makes me happy....even though Laurie isn't quite the same.

Amy is still well-liked. I have heard people think about it and then go with something else!

What I really like is a family name. When a child is given name(s) with family significance it is meaningful and gives them a sense of self and family pride. It is clear why their parents chose the name and that they are part of something larger. One aspect of that tradition, using of family last names as first names is perfectly fine, however, the use of other people's family last names as first names has sadly become "oh so trendy and ubiquitous" and it is hard to understsand.

Omg, that's ridiculous. I've never in my entire life heard anyone EVER refer to a bj as a piper.

I'm telling you, this is very common slang. Your crowd is likely more mature than mine

I'll bet Mrs. Vitale or Mrs. Cheney or Mrs. Clark said the same thing back in the day - "I've never in my entire life heard anyone EVER refer to a penis as a dick."
