Eileen Gu getting paid $14 million to represent China

Anonymous
I support her decision to compete for China. EG probably doesn't feel very American since she was raised by her Chinese single mother and has no contact with her American bio father as I understand it.

Shame on you! It’s her life, her sport, and it’s hard to represent the USA right now. She has every right to choose where to share her gifts.

Nobody sane is on team Vance and you write like MAGA

I believe her family is well off so probably full pay though what one has to do with the other... in your fevered mind maybe

Hopefully she at least pays US taxes on the $14 million.

Why would she? She renounced her us citizenship.

She's not on the IRS records as renouncing her citizenship. If that's the case, then I wouldn't object. She's fully committed to China at that point.

Rich people don't pay a lot of taxes

They claim "losses" or something. Is this new to you? You should look up other public people and see how little they pay.

+1 And I doubt she renounced her citizenship. As PP mentioned, there would be public record of that. No need to spread lies.

Female athletes are grossly underpaid. Whatever she’s done to increase her earning power is okay by me. My young daughter was mad at EG and even more so at Zoe Atkin, whom she met in the Park City terrain park. It would've been nice to see one American flag up there between two American-raised Stanford students. But those women also have a right to earn a living.

Good for Eileen! So wonderful for her. So very American of her. Chef's KISS!!

It's all about the money. I don't blame her for that at all.

It doesn't get more American that that, OP. Her core American values are on full display. Vance should be complimenting her.

I thought MAGA made a huge deal about protecting the integrity of women's sports when they decided to attack transgender people. He needs to stop attacking her. And you should do.

She got PAID. Good for HER.

But you know there are several American citizen athletes competing for other countries. Some aren't competitive enough to represent the USA, but are competitive in national competitions in Spain, Samoa, whatever...

Yes, I'm totally fine with that as long as it's a country that isn't like China.

Actually, I am proud of the new superpower - CHINA. What a success story!

LOVE IT!!

And Eileen and her mom are set for life!

I think my my bigger beef is China. Why represent a country known for its human rights abuses? Hopefully she's at least a spy for the CIA pretending to be an ally.

Obviously there is another one skiing for the UK, but I don't find that as ethically dubious.

Do you realize that this is ALL of the U.S. athletes now?

And hilarious that Russia is not here because of Ukraine but we just took out Venezuela's president

I know OP is MAGA. Only they can be so hypocritical at this point in time.

No it's not even remotely the same as decades of genocide and female fetocide in China

why dont you go on an Indian reservation and ask that?

hmmmm not familiar with US history are we?

I like how people keep commenting this but give zero details.

Did you get your education from a red state or overseas? You seem to have some holes.

Not our job to catch you up

Still waiting to hear what you think is equivalent to murdering millions of people.

wounded knee- both times & COINTELPRO-- ppl involved in executing that are still alive. Vietnam, Korea, Dresden, Mosul- hell all of the invasion of Iraq.

America is actually a completely amoral country. The patriotism we talk about is only the rantings of MAGA White supremacists. MAGA hates immigrants and racial minorities are not given a fair chance in this country.

American values is all about making a buck. And Eileen Gu's values are the best of American values.

Of course, her hard work and her mother's sacrifices are a result of the best of Chinese family culture so it was appropriate that she honored her background by playing for China. Besides, China is smart, strategic, influential and not broke like USA. I expect her career and earnings will sky-rocket in the future with her China connection.

Agree. UK is an ally.

And so is China. And so is Pakistan. And so is Saudi Arabia. And so is Ukraine. And so is Greenland/Denmark. And so is Venezuela. And so is Canada. And so is India. What is the point?

And she's gorgeous! Many of her endorsements are about her being so pretty, and the half-Chinese, half-American look does very well in China. Alysa Liu is also Chinese American, and at least so far, even after winning a world championship last year, she doesn't appear to have strong sponsorship income. I think it's an interesting comparison, as they are both Chinese Americans, though, of course, Elieen's mom is welcomed back in China, while Alysa's dad is not, so skating for China was never an option for Alysa. I hope Alysa can convert her Olympic Gold into a small fortune, too!
