American values is all about making a buck. And Eileen Gu's values are the best of American values.

Of course, her hard work and her mother's sacrifices are a result of the best of Chinese family culture so it was appropriate that she honored her background by playing for China. Besides, China is smart, strategic, influential and not broke like USA. I expect her career and earnings will sky-rocket in the future with her China connection.

Ah, the Asian parent "sacrifice".
What exactly did her mother sacrifice that countless other parents haven't done for their own children?
If a Chinese parent works, it's a sacrifice for the child.
If a Chinese parent stays-at-home, it's a sacrifice for the child.
If a Chinese parent takes her child to sports practice, it's a sacrifice.

All these "sacrifices" are simply called parenting in other cultures. Asian "sacrifice" language is a tool for manipulating guilt on the children.

Eileen Gu's mother likely failed to obtain her MRS degree and at the ripe age of 40 cast about for a sperm. There are lots of women like this who, at the closing of their fertile window, make desperate and drastic choices to be a single parent. Her mother seems to have amassed a high number of various US degrees prior to finally settling on a profession - killing time in school? Like Alysa Liu's father, she made an engineered choice about the donor's traits and features. But unlike Alysa Liu, it seems Eileen Gu was brought up with solid grounding, wide exposure to worlds outside of her sport and a loving multi-generational family.

Alysa Liu seems fine and happy I don’t see what point you are trying to make.

Of course she is.
And I am sure she'd be happier if she could control her presentation enough for a major brand to find in her a reliable spokesperson and public figure. Right now, the possibilities are Manic Panic hair dye and companies that sell dental Grillz.

From what I can see of Liu, you seem very unqualified to comment on what would make her happy

She doesn't seem to want to be marketable and I think she will make opportunities fior herself based on that.

Not everyone wants to be a Chanel spokesperson

She will be fine, maybe not 14mm per year kind of market, but def more than the avg DC parent household.

Oh, BTW - the payment is structured in form of endorsements.

Oh, and Eileen Gu made 23 million last year with Chinese company endorsements.

The other athlete was Zhu Yi, an American-born figure skater with Chinese heritage. I almost wonder if China sponsored Zhu Yi in hopes that she could beat Alysa Liu, whose father is basically an enemy of the state in China.

My own conspiracy theory is that she is prototype for future Chinese bio-engineered super soldier.

Alysa Liu does indeed speak Mandarin and is involved in the Chinese American community.

The article also says that her dad purposely chose a white egg donor because he wanted the mixed genetics and chose white egg donors for some of her other siblings as well.

Alysa liu cannot speak Chinese you ignorant dolt

She speaks Mandarin you dolt. Read the article.

Who the fux cares? I am glad young women athletes are raking in the money. Good for them. No reason for them to not get rich. These huge amounts of money will get more eyeballs on the game.

I am supremely proud of the fact that I am seeing so many Asian athletes in these games and actually succeeding. This is what strategy, hard work and resources are producing.

For 30 million dollars I would be willing to play for Antarctica and the moon.

Anyways, where is the pride in USA now. What a shithole

She is also a UCLA student so she is probably smart. She will grow out of the edgy style eventually if she tries to move into professional life. She does have some endorsements also. Gillette and Samsung, so she is bringing in some money it’s not like she has nothing. She will be fine.

This is hilarious to me. Two young women who are both Olympic gold medalists attending top universities and you’re whining that one of them can speak Mandarin that well. Most Americans can’t even hold a conversation in a foreign language. Who cares????

She is good but not Olympic caliber.

Her dad is a top AI expert. She is the add-on to his comp package.

If Alysa Liu wanted it, she wouldn’t have to change anything and still clear 30+ in endorsements for 2026

She’s the most popular person in America right now.

On social media she has left wingers and right wingers liking her. Young and old. Every demographic.

In two weeks she gained 6 million IG followers. Insane growth.

There are frat bro dudes at my run club and gym who mentioned how cool she is.

Her aerial photo is Michael Jordan flow state esque

Just insane aura.

Her Chinese sounds more like a beginner’s level, and her accent sounds like an American speaking Chinese. Gu speaks Chinese very fluently, with almost no noticeable accent. It seems that Gu has maintained stronger cultural ties with China and identifies herself as Chinese first (from one of her documentaries). As for Liu, it appears she keeps a distance from China.

I feel that their parents’ backgrounds likely play an important role in shaping this difference.
