Thursday on time?

Isn’t that planning time for teachers? If so, no, you can’t remove it.

It’s only for elementary school and was added at the last minute. Last school year it was supposed to be for the additional teacher training for the new ELA curriculum, but this year who knows?

I am going to GUESS on time.

I'm going to guess a delay to make sure bus drivers feel safe picking up middle schoolers. With the melting today there will be black ice and kids waiting on dark roads before 6 am when its still dark.

They could have solved that problem already with a delayed middle school start time.

I agree there should be a delay for the pedestrians to be safe, who you can't see behind the ice banks.

I had thought all the schools had to have the same number of snow hours, but I’ve read that ES principals have been using snow hours to cover the planning time they were required to give their teachers… so yeah, if we’re all different…

Do you mean the 3 hour early release days?

Why don’t they make the teachers arrive on time and plan then. Also, get rid of the workday on Feb 18 and the workday on the Friday of the week the kids come back from Spring Break. The incompetence at all levels of FCPS is astounding.

On the FCPS page they refer to it as planning time. (https://www.fcps.edu/family-resources/safety-and-transportation/limited-early-release-wednesdays) Whether it’s required or in addition to is another matter. It was initially added for state mandated training and then they decided to keep it.

The bigger concern should be over what the district counts as “instructional time” to squeeze all these early releases and a dozen snow days into a calendar that already has 179 days in it.

Friday April 10 is a School Planning Day (SP), not a TW.

Why would they do any of this when they still have hours built into the calendar to support these delays and closures? Your problem is with the 990 hours requirement. At 6 hour days (FCPS) can whittle 179 days down to 165 and still meet state metrics.

+1 no need to take any future days away when 10 snow days are already built in. These people are nuts.

DP. It would be even more disruptive to negotiate scheduled closures. Parents schedule appointments on those days to avoid missing school.

I do think FCPS should reconsider how many PD and TW they schedule in January/February given the likelihood of closures and delays. They lucked out with the timing of the scheduled Jan 29/30 closures, but imagine if the storm had been a week later. We would have had the 2 scheduled work days, then closed a week, then a week of delayed openings, followed by 2 scheduled days off.

MCPS and APS didn't have delays today.

What is different in FCPS? It seemed that Maryland had worse plowing jobs than Virginia.

Some of us would like a little more than the bare minimum when it comes to educating our children. Maybe the same amount of effort that was given to us as children is asking too much of today's workforce?

They said they plan to open on time next week in the announcement that thu/fri are delays.

Given that other local districts were back on time today, I could see them going back to on time monday despite the fact that there hasnt been much improvement of conditions. I'm showing rain by Wednesday which should wash away some of the ice mountains that are an issue.

You mean the people who are advocating for their kids to be in school and getting educated?

You are nuts!

100% this. I am so tired of hearing about how we are meeting the min. Is that really enough for all of you? Personally, I believe my kids deserve a better education than some uselessly cobbled together calendar that meets a legal minimum.
