When you act shamefully, you should be made to feel shame. When you are rude, you should be made to feel shame. It's part of growing up to learn these lessons and be courteous to others. Being a jerk is pathetic. |
I guess I'm not most people, because I would just reschedule and I wouldn't yell at anybody. Grumble to myself maybe if I had done the colon cleanse! I wouldn't want a sick provider working on me. Not just because I could get sick, either. They need to rest. I want them at top speed when they are working on me. Of course it would be inconvenient, but sh*t happens. |
This has also been my experience. The official line is “of course, go home if you are sick and rest” but irl it’s look the other way and encourage a culture of powering through because taking too much time off or “abusing” remote work time are the real issues. At my current workplace people show up sick and I get it. Unfortunately, while coworkers may not like it, they would rather piss off peers than upper management. |
No one is going to feel shame for doing what they need to in order to get paid. If you weren’t so privileged you’d get that. So yea, it’s pathetic that you can’t see beyond yourself to how the majority of this country has to do what is has to do to survive. |
Did you miss the part about how this applies to people who have leave and the ability to telework. Yes, yes you did. Too busy being a jerk to read. We all understand there are horrible work environments where people don't get adequate leave and are worried about being paid. Not talking about those circumstances. Talking about cases where perfectly entitled people with options still act this way and then try to gaslight their coworkers who are annoyed. |
Doctors need to call patients and give them the option to reschedule. A simple cold is several rounds of antibiotics and steroids and possible hospitalization. I’ve gotten sick twice by doctors and now I’ll just leave the appointment and reschedule as I go to the doctor for serious health issues and the last thing I need is the doctor to add to that. At least give a virtual option. Any doctor that risks their patients health should find a new profession. |
A sick doctor doing a colonoscopy is dangerous. |
You have no idea what anyone’s situation is like. No one has enough sick leave for their own illnesses or time to care for their children so your little disclaimer was pointless and of course ignored. |
I think what pp is missing is that, in a lot of workplaces, it is not shameful, it is actually what you are supposed to do and it is implicitly encouraged. And, let me tell you, if you think it’s bad in the corporate/office environment, that’s nothing compared to all the sick people showing up to retail locations, coffee shops, bars, and restaurants. |
And yet these same people can take weeks off for vacations. |
We're not talking about people needing to call out for every cold. OP stated she has the ability to telework. The sick coworker who came in today (well, yesterday at this point) is incredibly rude and should have stayed home. |
I’ve not encountered a workplace where I would receive no judgement or “concern” for taking time off or working from home beyond what is expected. If your workplace truly does not care at all I’d just take some sick time or work remote until coworker gets better. |
Agreed. It’s also childlike to think that coworkers are going to “shame” someone in to doing something that isn’t in the person’s best interest. But if it’s the PP fighting about their husband’s coworkers it makes sense since they don’t know what it’s like to work in person. |
That is untrue. Stop making excuses for yourself. |
