STOP COMING IN SICK

I wear a mask and use gel, but with 15 days of PTO per year and coughs that last from 2 weeks to 3 months, I’m coming into the office unless I feel that I’m dying.

I have been sick since 1/4, fortunately my employer allows telework when sick, I don’t know how else I would have managed this. Allowing telework while sick is the best things employers can do for sick as well as healthy workers, I just don’t understand the hesitation.

The hesitation and the claim is that people abuse it. They are complicit in their employees not being healthy.

I am wondering what the overlap is between:

a) people who think it's fine to come into work sick when telework is an available option

and

b) people who think it's OK to microwave fish in the office kitchen.

Today in a meeting, in walks someone with a bright red nose, sniffing and coughing, wiping their face with their hand. I eventually had to get up and leave as I just couldn't risk another infection. And this in a place where you don't even have to come in.

Put on a mask if you're that worried.

As well all know, masks have only a marginal effect on transmission risk, meaning they reduce but do not even come close to eliminating it. There is no risk of transmission if a carrier stays home. If there is no or low cost to staying home, then the obvious solution is to stay home.

What are you talking about? We absolutely know that masks are very effective against viral transmission.

Not unless its a properly fitted N95. Viruses spread like aerosol so the particles will easily leak out and spread through the air.

No. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8499874/

Yes, they have a marginal effect. We already discussed this. If I wear a mask as a healthy person all the time, I get some small benefits from it.

Nope. It’s not a small benefit.

Wash your own damn hands and wear a mask if it’s your thing. And just move on with your life.

Nah, I can and will make sure that assh0les who insist on coming in with COVID and flu get sent home. I am protecting myself and my family. You can choose to be a doormat if you want.

How are you doing this exactly? Walk me through all the steps from start to finish and don't leave out the part how you are sure they have covid or flu.

Oh look, another selfish dumbass came to show off just how ignorant he/she is. How refreshing.

Oh look, another loser who wants to stay home for every sniffle and period pang!

I'm not the one possibly killing people. Eff off.

Nobody is killing anyone, except in your delusional head. Some of us have jobs that are... important and would like hundreds in a horrible situation and cannot wait for me to get over my sniffle, nor for me to get over your paranoia!

Sure, sure....well, actual data disagrees with you. People very much die from both COVID and flu. So again, with all due respect, go eff your selfish self.

By that logic, you're "killing people" when you drive to work or the store.

If you go to the store sick, you could spread it and kill someone.

Of course they are. People die from colds, flu, covid all the time, you just don't hear about it. You are lucky you don't have any real health issues.

So many dramatic people in this thread:

1. No one is asking you to stay home for three weeks because you have a "lingering cough." The first 1-2 days when you're contagious (which, you know, you're not after three weeks) will suffice.
2. You are not so busy that you can't take a sick day once a year.
3. Your sick leave is not so bad that you can't take a sick day once a year
4. It's not "hysterical," "dramatic," etc. to not want to get sick and spread it throughout your household
5. If you have telework, as the OP of this thread specifically mentioned her coworker did, you can use it when sick.

I love how you posted a video about how people don't like when a coworker comes in sick and coughs/sneezes everywhere as a "gotcha" lol.

It's almost like it's universally considered rude!
