Helping 3rd grade girl "look cool" without compromising herself

Now is the time to have fun with cheap jewelry as long as they don't get in the way of play/learning. Lockets, friendship bracelets, etc.

But if other kids are actually saying her clothes are cheap and she's being called a baby, that's bullying and you should step in

Stop calling every natural behavior bullying, KAREN.

Look at the Karen karening hard. It isn't "natural" to say a classmate's clothes are cheap and call her a baby. That ish just ain't right.

For a third grader No

OK but why?

I'm serious - what's wrong with something like this? What makes it uncool?

Looks comfortable and stylish. Only note would be to untuck the shirt but maybe she likes do flips at recess so tucking is the way to go

It somehow manages to be both geriatric and babyish at the same time - quite a feat!

But also, do you spend any time with 3rd graders or at elementary schools? I do -- a lot. None of them dress like that. It's all leggings, sweats, hoodies, maybe some jeans, etc. OP's DD wants to blend in, so wearing the Boden outfit -- even if you like it -- would literally defeat the purpose.

H&M and Zara kids are good places to go. Jeans are back in (wide legs not flare) and you can pair it with a short cut sweater and or tee shirt that is more fun/ print colorful (not crop top but close, as the jeans are high waist there is no belly showing).

The skirts even though basic (jean skirt or black pleated skirts a bit K-pop style) can be paired with black sheer tights that have fun / interesting patterns.

Shoes : samba sneakers or similar and all stars high top are in and came come in interesting pops of colors. Boots in more muted colors but interesting shapes and height are another option.

Basically the game is to show her how to use colors and creative clothing more sparingly and paired with part of the tween basic uniform. Either the shoes and the tee shirt are colorful or the skirt is. But the rest is white/black/navy or jeans.

Other pp who recommended Zara and H&M but yes. Boden can look both geriatric and babyish. And that pic clearly is, It is cute from an adult perspective and good clothes but defeats the specific purpose of DD

A couple examples below of the wide legs silhouette paired either colorful sweater or fun boots. The viral video of the tween girls dancing in the desert on that country song which turned into a Zara ad (with the long hair your daughter’s friends have in mind…) can give you a good idea of another basic silhouette that is in at that age (just for knowledge). But basically the jeans are back

I agree that H&M, Zara, and Abercrombie (kids section for all) are great places for your DD, OP. Emphatic hard no to Boden.

Those abercrombie wide leg jeans are great -- my DD has a lighter and a darker wash. That's exactly the silhouette that's "in". She pairs them with Nike sneakers mostly. And the pair there with the bows are actually adorable if your DD likes a little flare -- that kind of embellishment is "in" too in 3rd grade. Then just pair with a some boxy t-shirts or hoodies and sweatshirts that hit at the waist.

So depressing to see all of you fully grown women indoctrinating young girls into the toxic “coolness” competition that does nothing but perpetuate the worst aspects of our culture. Why not unburden the next generation of such ignorance rather than promoting it? Depressing.

Dicks has a good but pricey selection of trendy girls clothes

There are some neighborhoods I’ve heard friends complain about (Bethesda) where wealthy mean girls will call out girls who wear target clothes. It’s a big downside of those areas. I would avoid target and old navy if my kid was in one of those schools. It doesn’t sound like cost is an issue for op but you can always go to secondhand kids shops to get brand name clothes. Brand signaling is a big deal to kids ant that age.

Also curly hair really needs a hairstylist who knows how to cut curly hair so it holds its shape as it grows out. A lot of good recommendations are on this board actually. And also no regular brushing/proper product so that it doesn’t get frizzy or wild.
