A 100 year old Football Rivalry Ending?

Whoever it is, he just doesn’t get it. Notre Dame plays Navy every year because Navy want the game and Notre Dame is grateful to Navy for basically keeping the school open during WWII. And Notre Dame plays Stanford as much as it can because it helps recruiting on the West Coast and because it values Stanford academics.

….and 2 guaranteed wins most years. ND did back out of the Michigan rivalry. You know why? They lost more than they won. ND values Stanford academics. Please. If Stanford started winning consistently against them, they would be axed just like they did to Michigan. Notre Dame can’t have too many losses and still stay independent. It’s all about the $$$

What are you talking about? ND had to end standing agreements with Purdue, Michigan State, and Michigan in order to accommodate ACC scheduling. They have historically played MSU and Purdue more than Michigan, too. They said at the time that they would work to get games with these schools on future schedules once the dust settled and DID do that.

ND would make more money in the Big Ten than they do as an independent. It is not about "$$", you're just ignorant.

With the expansion of the playoffs and formation of super conferences, there's no incentive to have a difficult out-of-conference game. Losses hurt the resume and keep teams out of the playoffs. Strategically, it makes sense for USC to aim for a 10-2 or 11-1 regular season rather than risk dropping an extra game by playing Notre Dame.

It's terrible for fans, though.

The major conferences should just not schedule ND. No incentive anymore

Agree. Let ND play other independent schools since they like their independence so much.

Still upset you haven’t beaten Michigan since 2109.

The ND hate and obsession with their status as an independent is quite entertaining to observe. I personally love that they are independent because it seems to trigger so many haters. It certainly keeps things more interesting.

Michigan is an after thought and Ohio State’s puppy.

Let’s see how interesting it will be when you get shut out of games against the top conferences.

If they ever are forced to join a conference it would be the ACC Which short of the Ivy Lesgue has several elite schools Duke, Stanford, Cal, UVA, Ga Tech. They are already a proud member of the ACC in every other sport. USC needs the rivalry more than ND.

The ONLY reason Stanford and Cal went to the ACC was because they weren’t invited to the B1G and not because of academics. USC is in the big leagues now, they don’t need ND. You have it backwards.

Y'all have it backwards. ND is its own thing. It does not need a conference. It has a TV deal that makes as much money as a conference. They get tons of eyeballs so anyone will play them. USC needs them -- they just need to try to win once and a while. The playoffs are structured to get ND in. ND is the only team that controls itself. Things could change and they may have to jump. But I doubt it. I hate ND. But the facts are what they are.

Sure that would be a reason to take action and join but that is not going to happen. No conference would do that. If BIG did it, the SEC and Big12 would just offer up teams in a deal. ND holds the cards at the moment.
