5-10 years. 5 years for the word to start speading: it was early to mid 90's, so news took longer to spread than it does today. Phen fen was pulled in the late 90's after it was linked to serious and sometimes fatal heart and lung issues. My cousin had 3 heart attacks while on it. She was late 30's at the time.

Fen phen became widely available and sought in 1992. It was pulled by 1997.
We have had 20 years of GLP 1 use and almost 50 in researching it.
People have been on GLP 1s for weight loss since 2018.
I am unclear why so many people seem to WANT there to be side effects instead of embracing what is essentially a "miracle" drug. Do you also tell people to battle chemical depression and anxiety without medications? Or to treat genetic hypertension with meditation and willpower alone?

People who take hypertension medicine have hypertension. People who take medicines for depression or anxiety have depression or anxiety. GLP1s are medicines for overweight/obsese/and metabolic disorders. This board is filled with normal weight people - so none of the above - who take it.

Define normal weight? Because when those taking GLP-1s go from say a size 20 to a size 2, far surpassing those of us at a “normal weight” then yes, I am going to take it and get to a size 2, too.

Thanks for being honest about what the real objection is.

Now please consider whether that is really happening. You really think people are going from 20 to 2?
At my height, a 40 lb weight loss is one to two dress sizes. Even for a short person, 40 lbs is no more than 4 dress sizes. So to go from 20 to 2 is a loss of 180 lbs minimum, probably much more. You think a lot of people are losing 200+ lbs?

I've never in my life been smaller than a 10 and currently I'm happy to plateu at 14/16 with the help of GLPs. So you can still feel superior to me, don't worry.

It's very rare. Prednisone also can cause blindness but it is a miracle drug if you have asthma.

Yeah - I've been on a GLP-1 for 6 months and have lost 27lbs. I've gone from a 16 to a 12. Is it 100% worth it to me? Yes. Side effects are mild nausea only in the 24 hrs after my shot. I eat tons of fiber so am pretty regular. I still get hungry and eat regular meals. The only difference is I rarely want seconds. The more weight I lose the more I'm exercising because I have far fewer aches and pains. I was pre-diabetic as well and diabetes plus heart disease runs in my family so I'm confident this is a major health improvement for me. But yeah - I think having a separate GLP-1 forum makes sense!!

It will be a case of fafo. I am happy for these people, if they are happy. I am on a regimen to lose 20 pounds and I never considered using these drugs. I suspect we will find out in 5 or so more years the true effects of these dugs on the digestive system. I'm thinking cancer will abound in this population: normal weight or barely overweight people with no comorbidities.

You realize these drugs have been in use since the early 2000s?

Yes my endocrinologist says he’s been prescribing them for 20 years without any concerns.

But he also warned that most people stay on them for life because they don’t make lifestyle changes to maintain the weight loss.

I gained a LOT of weight over the past ten years (had three kids and life’s stress got to me). I am still nursing so couldn’t take a glp-1 but have had lots of success so far going on a primarily whole food plant based diet eliminating meat, dairy, processed foods, oils and tracking my calories. I eat lots of complex carbohydrates and fruits and veggies - oatmeal, seeds, peas, lentils, beans (braised, chilis, soups), salads etc. I really recommend it for anyone who wants to try it themselves before going on a GLP-1. If I hadn’t been nursing, I might have immediately jumped to the GLP 1 but a WFPB diet has changed my relationship with food.

I’ll also add that I would take a GLP 1 if I needed to get to a healthy weight. But I think part of the reason it’s so hard to lose weight even with portion control is because our diets are so full of calories dense, high sugar, processed foods that wreak havoc on our metabolism and our hunger signals.

My brother lost a ton of weight on a GLP1 and it enabled him to start exercising and motivated him to overhaul his diet. He’s been off of it for awhile now. Another friend of mine has been in it for years and hasn’t changed their lifestyle and intends to be on it forever. The weight loss often prevents the side effects of obesity but the GLP1 doesn’t fix the underlying issue of diet and movement.

There still exist people who are not interested in GLP-1 and who are instead interested in non-medicinal methods of weight loss. I am one of them.

Why do you need another forum? Just start your own thread.

They can ask for non-medicinal diet and exercise advice.

One in 10,000. That's a very rare side effect for a drug.
