Sorry, you can’t all-caps this particular genie back into the bottle.

This is why people choose homeschool and private, clearly the better option to suicide by computer. PARENT YOUR F’ING CHILDREN!!

Read the article. This kid was in a homeschool program. It wasn’t beneficial and probably exacerbated the problem.

The kid had a chronic IBS that manifested in high school and they had to keep him at home for a year. The parents weren't homeschool zealots. But it doesn't matter what the truth of the story is. People will twist the life of this kid and blame the parents for their actions, so they can pretend it won't happen to them.

The parents gave the child unsupervised access to a computer, of course it’s their fault!

DP. Do you have a teenager? They can spend hours on laptops every day doing homework. Do you expect parents to sit next to them the whole time?

Mine sit at the kitchen table for at most 2 hours a night. Sounds like your kids are claiming to do homework and talking to chat gpt instead. Better be careful.

Mine sit at the kitchen table, too. What difference does it make when they sit? Are you looking at their screen for two hours?

Why are there so many pro-AI posters who refuse to hold tech companies accountable?

This is a DC message board. Maybe they're lobbyists.

Probably. Or just complete nut jobs.

This kid was 16, so old enough to drive, and in high school. Your rules wouldn’t have saved him.

Actually they would’ve survived just fine. They only get a cell phone to use when they’re driving alone and they don’t drive much by themselves until college. Also they don’t get unsupervised access to a computer until college. I had children because I wanted to be a parent, not because I wanted to give them a computer and let that do my job for me.

I’m all for sensible oversight and limits on tech for kids and teens, but honestly, kids who are raised in these police state households are the ones I worry most about when they get to college.

Should be tried for neglectful parenting.

Honest question: how does a parent supervise the use of chat GPT? Lots of kids use it for schoolwork. There's no way to see what your kid is typing in there from any parental control software I've seen.

Eventually you will realize that this sense of control you’ve created for yourself is an illusion.

Your think minimal computer usage = police state, but your kids will axe themselves over chat gpt and see nothing wrong with that? You’re delusional.

It’s not a sense of control I seek, it’s protection of their innocence and childhood. Once you give that up to computers you don’t get it back. Until college it’s considered an educational tool in our home and not something they depend on for daily life because they have plenty of other interests and activities keeping them busy. I don’t worry about this minute aspect of their lives one bit. You raise your children however you want, I’m not over here attacking you so don’t know why you feel the need to attack me.

Honest question: how does a parent supervise the use of chat GPT? It's a free website. Lots of kids use it for schoolwork. There's no way to see what your kid is typing in there from any parental control software I've seen.

I don’t think people on here are pro Mike Johnson refusing to vote on the safety for children online act.

Yup. For 10 years. AI will evolve in ways you can not even fathom, and there will be nothing in place to protect your kids (unlike in Europe where privacy and child safety are tightly regulated). Elections have consequences MAGAs. Half the country chose this.

And they refuse to vote on a bill to keep kids safe online.

You can’t, which is why there should be regulations around the technology.

I am not blaming the parents, but it's also not AI's fault either.
