Sorry, you can’t all-caps this particular genie back into the bottle.

This is why people choose homeschool and private, clearly the better option to suicide by computer. PARENT YOUR F’ING CHILDREN!!

I would say a majority of the population should not be homeschooling their kids. . . . hence how we got Trump and his cronies in office.

Read the article. This kid was in a homeschool program. It wasn’t beneficial and probably exacerbated the problem.

The kid had a chronic IBS that manifested in high school and they had to keep him at home for a year. The parents weren't homeschool zealots. But it doesn't matter what the truth of the story is. People will twist the life of this kid and blame the parents for their actions, so they can pretend it won't happen to them.

Why on earth are we pretending this is a parent issue alone rather than a design flaw. These gigantically profitable yet dangerous tech companies should be regulated.

Reminds me of Meta approving “sensual” chats with 8 year olds. Revolting!

+1 some people just want to blame the victims because that allows them to pretend it could never happen to them

+1

I want to say this could never happen to my kid but my kids get past “parental controls” all the time. And parental controls, particularly on Apple devices, are so buggy they are practically useless sometimes. And I think it’s totally by design- these companies have no incentive to prevent kids from using their products 24/7.

Don’t tell this to all the parents on here giving their middle schoolers smart phones for some staggeringly dumb reason.

We have a no phones with Internet access until you can drive rule, and a computers only for homework at the kitchen table. We also don’t allow any regular computer use at school until they are in high school. Our children are still alive.

Why do people even have children if they just going to let computers raise them?

This kid was 16, so old enough to drive, and in high school. Your rules wouldn’t have saved him.

Why are there so many pro-AI posters who refuse to hold tech companies accountable?

The parents gave the child unsupervised access to a computer, of course it’s their fault!

Actually they would’ve survived just fine. They only get a cell phone to use when they’re driving alone and they don’t drive much by themselves until college. Also they don’t get unsupervised access to a computer until college. I had children because I wanted to be a parent, not because I wanted to give them a computer and let that do my job for me.

DP. Do you have a teenager? They can spend hours on laptops every day doing homework. Do you expect parents to sit next to them the whole time?

Mine sit at the kitchen table for at most 2 hours a night. Sounds like your kids are claiming to do homework and talking to chat gpt instead. Better be careful.

This is a DC message board. Maybe they're lobbyists.

Your kid must not be in many advanced classes.
