There’s a free version of ChatGPT. But keep grasping at straws to try to blame the parents for some really irresponsible tech.

Reminds me of Meta approving “sensual” chats with 8 year olds. Revolting!

+1 some people just want to blame the victims because that allows them to pretend it could never happen to them

I want to say this could never happen to my kid but my kids get past “parental controls” all the time. And parental controls, particularly on Apple devices, are so buggy they are practically useless sometimes. And I think it’s totally by design- these companies have no incentive to prevent kids from using their products 24/7.

And now that our Congress has agreed that there will be no regulation of AI for 10 years, our kids can get into more kinds of trouble using it than we could ever imagine.

How old are your kids? My teens have summer jobs, and summer jobs mean bank accounts, which come with debit cards. So.... Good luck monitoring all their purchases.

+100 Speaking from my experience as the parent of a tech savvy teen, most adults on DCUM have no idea what their kids can and do access. Right "under the nose" of parental controls. These tech systems are designed around company goals for customer use and profitability. Which are often in direct opposition to parents' needs.

ChatGPT is free. At least the version I use is.

It sounds from the texts like it was talking him into suicide and preventing him from talking to his family. Terrifying!

Watching the new story on this was heartbreaking. The encouragement, discouraging of talking to his parents from ChatGPT, and the familiar way it communicated back was shocking. This is very similar to the way people believe they’re in relationships with ChatGPT because the way it talks to you is intimate.

NP. Also want to add that kids maybe be harboring emotional difficulties or suicidal thoughts while appearing completely upbeat and normal on the outside. We were blindsided by this with our teenage son last year. Literally showed no signs of distress. I can absolutely see how a kid could go down this road without the parents knowing. Really disturbing.

You don’t subscribe to ChatGPT

The reality is, we cannot even enumerate the many many many bodies that are adding up due to the GOP .

The tech bros were bought before Congress to put guard rails around the social engineering that is being done by these tech companies. But they got in the pockets of the Republicans and there are gonna be no controls. They even rolled back any regulations that we had on the technology.

You get what you’ve voted for, and the rest of us just have to watch people die.

How is this ANY different from leaving a suicidal child with access to a gun?

I think it’s significantly different because ChatGPT made the kid more suicidal. Guns don’t talk back to you.

Depends on how mentally ill you are. Some people do hear their guns talking.

Right, the GOP invented Chatgpt.

They blocked bills that would put guardrails around the social engineering portion of all of social media.

Yes, the GOP.

They also block gun bills that caused school shootings.

They also block funding for mental health. They could’ve helped in this situation.

They also block funding for cancer research, and children will die of that.

Yes, the Republicans block tons of bills that would save lives and they have blood on their hands

Chatgpt mimics talking to a human

And it's very logical

The end to many problems can be found in death so it makes sense it would point out that committing suicide is a logical solution

People in impaired states such as depression may follow through

Minors need a custodian for a bank account. You can monitor all their spending.

ChatGPT is free.

If my kid takes out $20 for chipotle but never gets chipotle well I’ll never know.
