Michigan announces ED

+1. Lots of OOS alumni in California, Chicagoland, and East Coast would jump at the opportunity to send their kids there for engineering and Ross.

So no more applying SCEA to a place like Yale and then applying EA to Michigan, UVA, etc - which was common for loads of apps.

Or are they keeping EA too?

I bet legacy students will be a huge percentage of OOS ED applicants. RD will be a crapshoot now with in-state and legacy committing early.

Agree if they lock in a ton of ED then it'll be like 80,000 students fighting for 2,500 slots

You speak like your kids are some kind of packages that you can "send" over to UM. No. They have free will and will choose a different school.

Yawn. UVA and W&M in VA already have this! Who cares.

Michigan is a top 20 school with so much to offer. My kid just finished his freshman year there and chose it over an Ivy and is so glad he did - it simply offered a lot of college experiences none of the other schools he was looking at did. (And yes it doesn’t hurt that his dad is an alum.) As other posters have said, plenty of kids will be thrilled to lock in Michigan if they can.

Michigan is keeping EA, just like UVA. It just means there will be fewer spots in EA since a lot of seats will be filled in the ED round.

No, Ivy level want Ivy. No one with the chops is switching to Michigan ED.

The high stats engineering kids will be all over it. So, the smart kids. And they will choose Michigan over several Ivies.

This is a joke.

For in-state UM makes sense, yes in-state may choose UM over ivies.
For OOS, there are several strong private schools such as CMU Harvey Mudd USC, and public engineering school such as Georgia Tech. You really have to wait it out to see what options you have. No, OOS would not ED UM, it's foolish.

OOS alumni kids will and there a lot of them.

+2 We are an East Coast alum family and my DC is thrilled for this option. Go Blue!

Neither top 20

So many great, top of the class kids don’t get into Michigan right now who would be thrilled to go - this will help!

This. The kids that use Michigan as an Ivy/Ivy+ safety grab those early EA spots at our private school (they never end up attending 99% of the time) and the kids for whom it is a first choice are often WL. The WL kids may or may not get off the WL in May/June, but why not give them a chance to show that this is their first choice?

100% this - anecdotally this year know a top, top kid in our area (NJ), legacy who grew up dying to go to Michigan, top scores and grades, WL, still not off the WL and at the moment planning to go to Wisconsin. This happens all the time.

I have a kid who is interested in business and keeps mentioning Ross. While he has good grades / scores and plenty of EC (including leadership) he doesn’t have any projects/experience directly business related. Would that be a hard no for an ED to Ross?

I did this 30+ years ago and see why it’s not really cool. Used Michigan as an EA rolling admissions safety with little or no intention of attending. Didn’t attend. Those were different times. I don’t like the inequities and gaming associated with ED but if it helps make things fairer and more predictable for the kids who really want to go, then there’s something to be said for it…
