Overlee Crash & Burn

Anonymous
Overlee parent here. I wouldn't call a 36 point loss a 'crash and burn' but credit where credit is due. OKM has some amazing talent and they rocked it on Saturday. And can't say enough good about the parents and welcome atmosphere (they set up canopy shade for the visiting bleachers!). Will be rooting for OKM to have a great rest of the season and look forward to chatting further with OKM parents at relays and divisionals.

Where were the OLV 11-12 girls? A bunch were missing…

It seems Overlee was missing a few key swimmers in the 11-12 girls' category. While it’s unclear how much of a difference their presence would have made, the results suggest their absence may have had an impact.

I’m not sure it would have mattered. The OKM swimmer would still have won free and back. Even if the missing swimmers had been seeded in breast and fly, and even if Overlee went 1-2 in fly, the deficit was bigger than 13 points. Certainly having two swimmers could have changed the 11/12 girls relay outcome, but that still puts Overlee at a deficit. It was predicted to be a closer meet, but some OKM swimmers over performed. They are kids, after all. Don’t bet on them in Vegas, ha ha.

You're taking your child's sport very seriously.

Not a weird observation. One of their 11-12 girls is one of the best freestylers in the league. Looking at the results she definitely wasn’t there and at least 2 more of their top girls for that age group were missing as well.

This is creepy.

Not creepy. OKM was a big upset. Was curious why. Looked at the result. Saw almost immediately that their top 11-12 girl swimmer was missing but her brother was there.

OKM parent here. First, the people making some big thing about some of the D1 teams are off-base, particularly with Overlee. I quite enjoyed my interactions with parents, coaches, and swimmers (to quote Severance, “I enjoyed them all equally”). Our team reps and officials spoke quite kindly about Overlee team members, coaches, and officials. Everybody was polite and friendly. We could not be more grateful that Overlee hosted relay carnival and divisionals last year, and they have now come up Burke for a dual meet two years in a row.

Second, because we have a AAA 12 year old swimmer who swam back and free this week, that outcome probably would not have changed if Overlee’s missing swimmers had attended. Had they swum those two events, a second place OKM finisher in free might have bumped to third (reducing OKM’s score by 2/increasing Overlee’s score by 2). And a third place finisher in back would have finished “off the podium,” while one of the missing swimmers would likely have placed second. Overlee would have gained 3 points, OKM would have lost 1 point. If Overlee’s missing swimmer had swum breast, she would have won, so Overlee would gain 5 points and OKM would lose 2 points (the change from first to second). The 11-12 girls fly outcome likely would not have changed. So, best case, Overlee gains 8 points plus potentially a relay (5 points).

Believe me, we were as shocked as anyone to win the meet. It was by no means a slam dunk.

Serious question- do parents really care this much about summer swim?

It’s obvious from this forum that some do. Not everyone cares this much though.

While the meet was close and a great win for OKM, I think the win was more a function of OLV missing kids and not having the depth they typically do paired with OKM having some top notch swimmers than OLV being on decline…
