How can admission essays carry even an ounce of weight going forward?

Is it time for schools to 100% kill all essays? Honestly, what's the point?

I can smell gpt essays a mile away. Heck, I can smell gpt posts on DCUM a mile away.
College essays need to be authentic. There is nothing authentic in the gpt essays.

You say you can but you probably can’t.

I doubt you can always tell.

How would you know, anyway? If the LLM-generated essay is good enough, you won't know, further supporting your notion that you can "smell gpt essays from a mile away".

It's like hair plugs. Everyone says they can always tell, but that's because you can detect that bad ones.

My kid used one of the AI essay links above this past cycle. It didn’t rewrite essay but flagged the areas that could be improved. Kid rewrote essay 10+ x to get a 95+ rating.

The AI tools aren’t set up to rewrite it but do brainstorm and suggest commentary on how to be more descriptive or impactful with hypothetical examples. Like the best essay editor you can imagine.

Great admissions cycle.

Low paid AOs are much less intelligent than most students applying to selective schools and much much less intelligent than AI.

Regardless of your baseless claim, they see more essays than you do and can spot the inauthentic ones better than you can.

They really can’t. Now, they can apply their own bias.

Voice, tone, and writing styles can differ greatly. At age 17 or 18, a person’s style can be heavily influenced by the last two teachers! Style can also be influenced by activities. The kid who journals everyday and reads fiction novels is going to write differently than the kid who writes a lot for mock trial or debate. AOs love the sweet, more feminine reflective tone probably because they unconsciously relate to it. If they see a boy write in this style they will “feel” it was written by someone else. Flat isn’t necessarily bad as it’s more neutral and as long as it’s loaded with things that check the boxes a safer approach.

If you are only reading something for a few minutes among hundreds of others, you are even more likely to be applying your bias.

Essays are a stupid requirement. They need to get rid of them. But then an entire industry of essay writing will be gone. But wait, that would be eliminated by AI eventually anyway. The point is essays are subjective, rich kids get outside help with theirs, well educated parents can help or just write their kids essays. Its another unfair requirement.

Which one? Any downsides to a kid uploading their draft essay to a site like this?

There are hundreds of AI tools for essays now. No one is “advertising” for AI! Every one should explore on their own.

I think info sharing equalizes the college admissions process.

I think this says more about OP than anything else.

Good writing has always been a reflection of good thinking. Which is why the essays were valuable. Those essays gave an insight in how a student thinks and conveys their thoughts.

ChatGPT has changed all that. I can always tell when people use it, but it won't be long until that's not possible. Writing and thinking are becoming a task that you can outsource to AI. I think it's terrible for humanity. It's fair to assume everyone under the age of 20 is going to be a dumbass going forward - completely incapable of deep thought or real concentration. It's a tragedy.

I guess colleges are going to be judging students on their prompt from now on. If I were a professor, I would blue book the hell out of students.

Because if certain groups don’t do as well that’s clear cut evidence of racism. Doesn’t matter that the tests are carefully analyzed and constructed to be bias free.
