Insulting parents for sending kids to school on days that are official school days makes you look like someone that no one would want to have responsibility for any kid.

You cannot because your job/contrat is not a 10 months out of the year job/contract. I work 12 months of the year because that's what my job/contract requires of me.

Sorry, that should read MCPS, not CPS

I guess a principal could have an internal deadline, but the official MCPS calendar says 6/17: MP4 Teacher Grades Due by End of the Duty Day

Teacher here. I’m old fashioned and I like having a full classroom on the last day. It’s good closure to the community we’ve built all year long. I understand that some families have already made plans when the 13th was the last scheduled day and won’t be able to come those days. I also know that some folks (kids and grown-ups alike) don’t really love the whole big goodbye and would prefer a quiet “slip out” the week before. And I also fully understand that since there truthfully won’t be a whole lot of curricular instruction on the 16th and 17th, some will have other ways to use that time and won’t come. But, everyone in my classroom on that day will feel a sense of closure and pride after working hard all year long.

Also: if your student is a hair short of 90 % or attendance for the year if they’ve already had 16 17 absence) it might be a good idea to send them because you might get a “reminder” this summer that regular attendance is important. Last summer mcps was really pushing for 90%+ attendance.

I’m almost certain and so is she that some of her magnet teachers will be teaching talk content those days and expect their class to be there

The better way to ask the question: Is there a real reason to send my student on June 16 and 17?

If your middle or high school student still has some loose ends with grades (missing assignments or assessments), then YES. Use those days to make up some work and bring those grades up!

If your elementary (or middle) school student needs some supervision on those days, then YES.

Otherwise, no need. Teachers won't give any new assignments and there won't be any negative academic consequences for missing those days.

And attendance really doesn't matter in today's MCPS anyway. Excused/unexcused - means nothing. There is no attendance policy in MCPS.

Teachers will not be accepting late work after Friday. Canvas will close on Friday June 13th. If your kid has loose ends, they should take care of it now
