How are some parents okay with this?

Because I believe there is value in teenagers having a job. Mine needs a job to earn spending money. And yes some teens go to some sleepaway camps and are highly committed to pursuing interests along with having a job.

Not a fan of teens who never work. If your kid has a summer free, get a job is my opinion. YMMV.

You didn’t answer the question. You just said teens should have a job in different words. What value do you think there is in teens having a job and why is it more valuable than teens having independence and learning to make their own decisions? Or just, you know, more valuable than gettin more sleep?

I’d bet my house that you have no clue why you hold this opinion. You don’t seem like the thinking type.

Let me guess. Your kids show their independence and decision-making skills on teen "service trips".

Nope. My teen sleeps in as late as he wants, then either goes to the gym or hangs out with his friends. Or plays video games!

This is amazing. Have fun with him living in your basement when he is 30.

Good luck with that anxiety.

I did the same thing at that age and moved out for college and never went back.

So your teens have independence and learn how to make decisions with your money. That works for you. Great. My kids like to spend money so they need to earn some money. Feels different to spend it when you earned it.

I also think it's important to experience a job in the service, retail, child care, or customer service industry. It was very formative for me and helped me realize why it was important for me to go to college.

I mean, why not kick your kid out to make their own way in the world if that’s how you feel?

You’re reaching. You might be a superior mother, but making your kid work at Burger King all summer certainly doesn’t prove it.

It's reaching to think there is value in teens having jobs? It's not reaching. DP and I think your view is the minority. I think you are probably a troll. The Burger King reference is weird these teens don't work at Burger King get a grip.

I never said there is no value in a teen having a job. I said that there is not necessarily MORE value than a teen NOT having a job.

Learn to read, please. Maybe hire a smart teen to tutor this summer. Win win.

Same here for myself and my spouse.

Maybe these parents who hassle their kids about sleeping are more likely to raise neurotic control freaks who functionally contribute no more or less to society than the kids who grew up with chill parents. Based on observations from this thread.

We’re on a slab.

Why should I care? My child gets straight A's, has a job, is president of several clubs, and is in general doing an absolutely amazing job. If she can find some time to catch up on sleep, good for her.

I know, right? They only get one childhood. I consider teen years a part of that. Teens need sleep more than they need a million of these other things that anxious parents make them do.

Who cares if they stayed up playing video games??? They are teens.

I do. It’s ok that our families operate differently.

Why do you care? They benefit more from sleeping than having to get up to look at your sour face. Do you also have younger children you need them to raise?

I really love that you’ve made up this story in your head about who I am and how my family is. And I find it so weird that you care about how our family functions.

Teens sleep late. It’s what they do. You can’t change their internal clocks. What you CAN do is be a dick about it and sing “rise and shine!!” and open their shades at 9am and start shaking them. Why do they need to be up? No reason other than you want to control them?

I might take you seriously if you actually knew how quotes worked.

Right back at you, if you actually said anything of substance on a discussion board.

I’m only ok with it now that I saw your post. What a relief! Because that’s what my 15 year old is doing.

My younger kids are at camp and I don’t know what my teen would do all day anyway so I’m glad he’s sleeping. He plays a lot of sports but they are in the evening.

My kid's summer job is late afternoon/evening (food service) and then he often goes out afterward. With tips he makes bank and works hard. and I am thrilled about the idea of him just sleeping as late as he wants to in the morning and not having to double check he's out the door on time for school etc. Dislike the late nights, but love the mornings.

I’d like to point out that all I did was answer OP’s post I didn’t attack anybody. I just posted my own experience, as part of the discussion on this board.
