How are some parents okay with this?

I'm not ok with a 1pm wake up time. That means they have stayed up all night playing video games. Unless they are sick, they are up by 10 am the latest. That's how our family works.

If my teen were working late, that would be a different story. But I do expect her to get up at 7 to help me with the 7-8 out-the-door rush. She can then go back to bed for a few hours, though.

That is so selfish! Your teen didn’t decide for you to have more kids. Kids are your responsibility.

+1 Aside from walking the dog (unless you or your spouse were the ones who wanted a dog), your older kid shouldn’t have to do the other things on a regular basis. My teen sleeps till noon now during summer break and cleans up the kitchen once she’s up, including emptying the dishwasher and washing the morning’s dishes. Why are you emptying the dishwasher before work?

This is not the hill to die on. I don’t love that my HS and college kids will sleep that late but they are kind, respectful, mature, responsible and hard-working so who I am to judge. My HS student is an athlete and easily gets up for early practices and games when needed. My college kid gets up really early on his internship days and is never late. I respect that they have different circadian rhythms and are deeply exhausted after several days of sleep early mornings.

Who cares if they stayed up playing video games??? They are teens.

I do. It’s ok that our families operate differently.

+1. Straight A's. Good person. Sleep in time for the summer--who cares!

Same. I get up at 5:30am now.

My parents were extreme jerks about what time I woke up as a teen and in college (when i was home during summer and breaks). I made straight A's, went to a great school, had great internships and was a good daughter. Why the heck were they hassling me for not waking up by 9am on my days off?? My mom had a bugle she'd play. I'm still angry about this.

She told me I'd get it when I had my own kids, but they're in middle school now and all wake up at the crack of dawn still. I wish they'd sleep in.

My mom would play Sousa matches.

Why do you care? They benefit more from sleeping than having to get up to look at your sour face. Do you also have younger children you need them to raise?

Why?

Because I believe there is value in teenagers having a job. Mine needs a job to earn spending money. And yes some teens go to some sleepaway camps and are highly committed to pursuing interests along with having a job.

Not a fan of teens who never work. If your kid has a summer free, get a job is my opinion. YMMV.

You didn’t answer the question. You just said teens should have a job in different words. What value do you think there is in teens having a job and why is it more valuable than teens having independence and learning to make their own decisions? Or just, you know, more valuable than gettin more sleep?

I’d bet my house that you have no clue why you hold this opinion. You don’t seem like the thinking type.

So your teens have independence and learn how to make decisions with your money. That works for you. Great. My kids like to spend money so they need to earn some money. Feels different to spend it when you earned it.

I also think it's important to experience a job in the service, retail, child care, or customer service industry. It was very formative for me and helped me realize why it was important for me to go to college.

I mean, why not kick your kid out to make their own way in the world if that’s how you feel?

You’re reaching. You might be a superior mother, but making your kid work at Burger King all summer certainly doesn’t prove it.

Let me guess. Your kids show their independence and decision-making skills on teen "service trips".

Nope. My teen sleeps in as late as he wants, then either goes to the gym or hangs out with his friends. Or plays video games!

It's reaching to think there is value in teens having jobs? It's not reaching. DP and I think your view is the minority. I think you are probably a troll. The Burger King reference is weird these teens don't work at Burger King get a grip.

This is amazing. Have fun with him living in your basement when he is 30.

See how a kid can WORK and still sleep in? Get a life.

Who are you even responding to? The OP didn't say the kid had a job or not. Many people seem to agree keep whatever hours you want if you have a job. Except for the person whose kids are independently wealthy and don't need a job.

The average kid who has a mommy posting on this site doesn’t NEED a job. Mommy just WANTS him to have a job because she thinks it makes her a good mommy. Mommy is still going to pay 200-400K two years from now to send him to college. Get real.
