Beastie Boys "Brass Monkey" is about roofieing girls and raping them.

I'm sure you know this, but just because an artists writes about/sings about/raps about something, doesn't mean they did it. I took a lot of creative writing courses to fulfill my English obligations and wrote all kinds of crazy shit that never happened. I just have a good imagination and am creative. I never have, and would never do a lot of the things I wrote about.

I know that. I used to rock out to that Beastie song and many others. There is a verse describing giving a fiesty girl a sip of a drink with spanish fly in it...then she's on his tip. The title of the post is lyrics which hit different and I think this counts.

How about Grease “Summer Nights”.

Tell me more, tell me more…did she put up a fight…

She's only seventeen
She gives me love like I've never seen
She's only seventeen
Daddy says she's too young, but she's old enough for me!

If you know what I mean
And the way she looked was way beyond compare
So how could I dance with another?
Ooh, when I saw her standin' there?

What’s bad about this one?

Not a damn thing.

The harpies on this thread are insane.

“Don't, don't you want me?
You know I can't believe it when I hear that you won't see me
Don't, don't you want me?
You know I don't believe you when you say that you don't need me
It's much too late to find
You think you've changed your mind
You'd better change it back, or we will both be sorry”

Stalker city, that song. At least it has the woman telling him to take a hike. It’s such a catchy, sing-along-type song, until you find yourself singing the guy part and yikes.

This is a fascinating, well-written song. You have neither quoted the most disturbing parts of what the jilted man says nor the cautious brush-off from the woman running for the door.

Yes, we all know that artists do not create only autobiographical work. But the fact that they wrote this song and it became a big hit is problematic. That behavior is not something to be celebrated. If I wrote an upbeat song about genocide and how great it was, and it became a massive hit, wouldn’t you think that’s troubling?

Any pick me girl songs. You Belong With Me, Skater Boy, etc.

Loved them when I was young bc I was also nOt LiKe OtHeR gIrLs. Then I grew up and realized the boys pretty much sucked all along and it would have been more fun to hang out with the cheer captains and ballerinas.

Skater boy was especially gross since it’s delighting in a 20 year old woman being abandoned by her husband to raise a baby alone because she dumped a boy back in high school. WTF.

I never realized she was abandoned. I just thought she was up late feeding the baby while the dad was snoring...how snotty can a song get? Worse than "My Boyfriends Back"!
One I re-heard recently was SR71..he spends the whole song complaining about the chick and then "she may not be Miss Right, she'll do right now." I.e. he'll still hit it. Lovely.

There is a new version with consent

Why would they ruin a perfectly good song?

The new version is awful. It has no romance in it.

The original was clever and not at all.about being takem advantage of.

Actually I read that that song was about her being empowered in that era. It sounds crazy I know but I read about the historical context after also getting icked about it and I guess he's making it OK for her to stay. Helped save the song for me

I’ve heard Sting in interviews say that people come up to him and say that was their wedding song etc. and he just shakes his head.

It was on Behind the Music where he said that.
