Lyrics that hear differently today

Anonymous wrote:“Love the One You’re With” is actually a justification of cheating.

It’s not about cheating. It’s about a new relationship helping you get over the person you love, but can’t have. Like the saying, the best way to get over a man is to get under another one.

The tone mixed with lyrics is questionable nowadays.

“Mama loved mennnn. Mama’s in the graveyard, papa’s in the pen.”

Were you not paying attention when Naughty By Nature defined and explained it in detail in the song?

No, lol...I just kinda heard the chorus on that one...that's all I processed..."something something something something O.P.P., yeah, you know me."

I've heard it played like a hymn but if you pay attention to the lyrics...not so much.

There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?

And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah.

I don’t find these problematic at all.

not problematic per say but I never knew it was sexual in nature

It is about Biblical affairs (Samson and Delilah, David and Bathsheba) and the fall out.

Affairs are sexual by definition

These are beautiful words that in my opinion describe a relationship where the sex was spiritual as well as physical. The spiritual connection seems to now be lost. Leonard Cohen is a poet.

Stevie wonder’s Part time lover. Although I am sure it was questionable when it came out too.

That is how I interpret it to be as well. Beautiful song.

No, but you do know have to know the context otherwise it can feel weird.

But you have no problem with “Goodbye, Earl,” apparently.

Billy Ocean's "Hey, You, Get Into My Car" - the lyrics were ridiculous both then and now.
