Lyrics that hear differently today

Another super creepy song, espeically when you watch the music video -

Hello by Lionel Richie - creepy college professor follows the blind girl around singing creepily

I've been alone with you inside my mind
And in my dreams, I've kissed your lips a thousand times
I sometimes see you pass outside my door

Hello, I've just got to let you know
'Cause I wonder where you are
And I wonder what you do
Are you somewhere feeling lonely?
Or is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart
For I haven't got a clue
But let me start by saying
I love you

Beach Boys: “God only knows what I'd be without you
If you should ever leave me
Well life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me”

how did you not know these lyrics? the BB are well before my time but even I knew what they are saying...

Baby its cold outside is a great song, from the era where a person who wanted to stay over couldn't, without getting shunned by society for being promiscuous, so they made up all kinds of excuses to talk themselves out of it.

It is also a female empowerment song (originially written with the genders reversed, not the way it is sung now.)

Down by the river I shot my baby
Down by the river
Dead, ooh
Shot her dead, ooh

You ran that night that you left me
You put me in my place
I got you in a stranglehold, baby
And then I crushed your face

The tension
Is getting hotter
I'd like to hold her
Head underwater

You let me violate you
You let me desecrate you
You let me penetrate you
You let me complicate you

Baby It's Cold Outside was Baby It's Raining for us, but 20 years and two kids later...

When the female sings, “Say, what’s in this drink?” it hits differently than when it was written. It sounds very sinister now, a la Bill Cosby.

However, the rest of the song is clearly a playful dance between the two parts because she wants to stay as much as the he wants her to, but she knows she’s supposed to be a good girl who wouldn’t entertain the thought of spending the night with her date, so she pretends he’s talked her into what she wanted all along.

This was an oft-performed song during Greek Week talent shows in the late 1980s:

Ain't no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed
'Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed
Ain't no doubt about it
Baby got to go and shout it
Ain't no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed
'Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed
Baby doncha hear my heart
You got it drowning out the radio
I've been waiting so long
For you to come along and have some fun
And I gotta let you know
No you're never gonna regret it
So open up your eyes I got a big surprise
It'll feel all right
Well I wanna make your motor run

Still one of the best songs ever.

It completely captures high school dating and regret

And te girl holds all the power in the song from beginning to end.

+100 this is still a great song and "glowin' like the metal on the edge of a knife" is one of the greatest lyrics ever.

How many of us Millennials enthusiastically sang and rapped long with City High's song What Would You Do? as teens without realizing what it was about?

I know I did and so did most of my friends. We had no idea.

Boys and girls, wanna hear a true story?
Saturday night I was at this real wild party
They had the liquor overflowing the cup
About five or six strippers tryna work for a buck
And I took one girl outside with me
Her name was Lonni, she went to junior high with me
I said, "Why you up in there dancin' for cash?
I guess a whole a lot's changed since I seen you last."
She said
What would you do if your son was at home
Crying all alone on the bedroom floor
'Cause he's hungry?
And the only way to feed him is to
Sleep with a man for a little bit of money...

Ha! I love most of these songs. Music would be so boring if it was all run through sensitivity training.

What are you talking about?

Paradise in the Dashboard Lights is rhe ultimate consent song with a female leaning power balance. It accurately depicts the awkwardness of that first encounter from both sides, with a strong female emphasis calling the shots.

It is from an era where consensual sex was not even talked about, so it is decades before its time.

So this is like an "I can't live without you", "life would be meaningless without you" sentiment. What's wrong with it?

Has been called the perfect song by many (including Paul McCartney) but like the “what’s in this drink” lyric sounded more innocent before Cosby, “if you should ever leave me” can sound very Lifetime emotional abuse movie if let yourself go there (so clearly don’t!).

I'm ridin' in your car
You turn on the radio
You're pullin' me close
I just say no
I say I don't like it
But you know I'm a liar
'Cause when we kiss, ooh
Fire

Late at night
You're takin' me home
You say you want to stay
I say I want to be alone
I say I don't love you
But you know I'm a liar
'Cause when we kiss, ooh
Fire

How can you not know? Don't you understand English. Lyrics are clear as day.
