He is that kid we all went to school with. The one who so badly wanted to fit in with the cool kids and would do anything to make them like him. He was that kid who would swallow a goldfish because the popular kid told him to.
Except, in this case, the popular kids (celebrities) are not asking him to do this. They know the industry well enough to know it will actually hurt them. |
Why the sudden interest in Hollywood, after years of demonizing the "leftist Hollywood elite?"
Does Trump want them to make a movie about him, depicting him as a heroic muscle bound tough guy the way his lackeys keep doing with AI? I bet that's what it is... |
I find it fascinating that in 5 pages of earnest discussion about the pros and cons of this proposed policy no one thought to research how/why Trump came up with this dumb idea. He is not a big thinker, he is not well read, he is incurious, he acts on impulse and "instinct" and he is highly susceptible to listening to anyone who seeks an audience with him (in this case Jon Voight) or whispers in his ear. So how on earth did you all jump on this idea like it's a serious, well-thought idea?
This is where the idea came from: The idea of imposing tariffs on foreign movies appears to have been pitched to former President Donald Trump by actor Jon Voight and his manager, Steven Paul, during a meeting at Mar-a-Lago. Voight, named by Trump as a "special ambassador" to Hollywood, along with Paul and media executive Scott Karol, presented a proposal aimed at reviving domestic film and TV production. This proposal included federal tax incentives, tax code changes, co-production treaties, infrastructure subsidies, job training, and, in "certain limited circumstances," tariffs on foreign-made films. Shortly after this meeting, Trump announced on Truth Social his plan to impose a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the United States, citing the decline of the American film industry and national security concerns. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/05/trump-tariff-hollywood-movies.html https://www.businessinsider.com/jon-voight-help-trump-make-hollywood-great-again-2025-5 |
Jon Voight is mentioned several times on page 1 of this thread, with links showing it was his idea. |
PP here. Sorry, I looked but obviously missed them. But my point remains that most of Trump's "big ideas" are a result of someone pitching him on something--they're not well thought out or researched ideas. Given that the people he talks to these days are full-on MAGA (therefore delusional), mentally unstable (Laura Loomer), or just opportunistic (mostly business people wanting to promote their niche industry/idea), he's going to be announcing a lot of ill-conceived initiatives/policies in the future. Hopefully most won't see the light of day. It's going to be a long 3+ years... It's going to be along 3+ years since God knows who will |
