A Hollywood producer summed it up: Americans will have to pay more for movies, Americans will stop going to the theater, movie houses lay people off and make fewer movies.

That's not how movie prices work.

Theatres set their own ticket prices and normally pay a percentage of the boxoffice gross to the film distributor as film rental. this averages ~50-55%, but can be higher for recent "big" releases and slightly lower for older titles. Some late-run and repertory bookings are flat-rate.

So, are film rentals going to go from 50-55% to 100-110%? That would just kill all US screenings of foreign films. Raising the ticket prices wouldn't help theatres, and no theatre is going to risk confusing or angering its patrons by having different ticket prices for different movies, anyway.

So, yeah, it's a dumb idea that can't be implemented.

People please read up on this. US movies are often shot in location overseas or have some production there. It sounds like it’s similar to a US supply chain that isn’t entirely American, which is all of them. The danger also comes in retaliation from other countries, and just that he said it means he doesn’t care about our allies. That, in and of itself, is short-sighted and reckless.

ALL of it is short sighted and stupid. If you wanted more movies made in the US instead of in Canada or wherever, there is a tried and true way to do that - you provide tax incentives and other incentives. You don't levy tariffs - HOW? - on stuff made elsewhere.

This could get the Hollywood elite on his side. Many A-listers have been sounding the horn on how bad it is in Hollywood and getting anything filmed in the US for years.

I listened to a podcast with Adam Scott and Rob Lowe and was surprised to hear that for his game show The Floor, it is filmed in Ireland, because it's cheaper to fly 100 contestants to Ireland and house them there to film than it is to film on the Fox lot in CA.

That's...insane.
