I listened to a podcast with Adam Scott and Rob Lowe and was surprised to hear that for his game show The Floor, it is filmed in Ireland, because it's cheaper to fly 100 contestants to Ireland and house them there to film than it is to film on the Fox lot in CA.

That's...insane.

Do you understand: this will not make it cheaper to film in the US. It will just make it more expensive to film in Ireland. Who do you think that helps? Do you think that leads to more of anything you want - or just less film and TV being made?

It's cheaper to film outside of the US because other countries have lax laws re: labor.

It's all union here in the US and they have strict terms on hours and standards. Those don't exist outside of the US. It's the same reason why the US will never bring manufacturing back here: safety & regulations make it cost prohibitive. Plus, the US doesn't give out as many filming incentives as other countries.

The UK, Ireland and Australia have lax labour laws?

We can even make domestic propaganda domestically anymore. How do people make so much money when we make so few things...

Per usual, the White House is already walking this back. Just a demented old fool...

Do the 100% tariffs mean The Seven Samurai will now be the Fourteen Samurai?

Where would Dune or Lord of the Rings been filmed?

LOTR was made by a NZ director! Why in the world shouldn't it have been made in NZ?

Because the Supreme Orange Leader of the World says that he stole money from Americans by filming in New Zealand. It should have been filmed in America, or pay a 100% tariff fee for distribution in America.

Your daughter will be fine with only 2 Samurai this Christmas. Trump needs another gold toilet.

He used a script that adapted a British book. That's money stolen from American writers.

So now he’s trying to shakedown Hollywood. That’s all this is.

There is too much greed and overcharging in the US. Starting with real estate costs. Fix that and a lot of things will return.

Yah, real estate is super duper expensive in rural Utah. Way more expensive than Ireland.

Hollywood was founded in Hollywood CA because it was a cheap desolate desert.

It's expensive now because it's an incredibly, massively huge industry that dominates the world.

Pick a lane, sir.

Why does Trump even care about this? I guess because entertainment is one of the Christian Dominionist "Seven Mountains"?

It’s an attack on the first amendment.

First Amendment doesn't apply in sovereign foreign countries.

These are extremely complicated issues. Trump and his Cabinet are, first and foremost, utterly incompetent.

He's saying that if you make a movie elsewhere, doesn't matter where the director is from, the movie will be taxed when shown in the US. Another way to stick it to the taxpayers.

But, um, how does that work when the film distributors get paid based upon a percentage of boxoffice revenue? Normal film rental paid by cinemas in the US is ~50-55%. Does the percentage go up?
