Snow Day next Tuesday?

I think it's going to be off Tuesday and Wednesday. Regular start on Thursday and Friday.

I agree, models are slowly converging on a 2-5" solution for Tuesday, with more snowfall to the south of the DC area, and less to the north. That should mean Wednesday is spent clearing schools, and then a regular day on Thursday, unless there's a threat of freezing rain on Thursday, which some models hinted at.

Maybe just Tuesday off then?

The snow is not supposed to stop until Wednesday early am. But models are now showing more of the storm on Tuesday all day. Almost potential freezing rain on Wednesday makes it doubtful. The good news is temperatures are going to climb quickly into the 50s Thursday.

We won’t get that lucky unless it’s more on the 3” or less side of things and it starts raining early enough Wednesday to start washing it away. Even then, probably a 2 hour delay Weds.

My app is now showing about 3 inches on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The forecast is way too shaky. It’s going to snow and ice, some. Track keeps moving and totals keep shifting. Tuesday and Wednesday off are a lock. What happens Thursday and Friday depends on how much or how little the storm event drops on T/W.

Does FCPS ever cancel school but allow for evening activities (e.g., a concert) if the weather is clear by then?

Yes, I could see this happening on Wednesday if the totals are low and lots are ok. But they won’t cancel Tuesday, allow Tuesday night activities, and then cancel Wednesday. It’s usually only on the last day of cancellations that they reopen in the evening.

We're seeing it on specialized meteorological sites, where models keep updating several times a day. The weather people in the general media are not going to risk a major prediction error, and take the reputational hit, by announcing anything this far out.

We have a very interesting month ahead:
1. Saturday, wintry mix, little to no accumulation.
2. And then it gets dicey: Tuesday and Wednesday, two consecutive thumps of snow. The timing is still not nailed down. The accumulation is still not nailed down. Latest models show iNtEresTinG quantities of snow, which might not actually happen, so meteorologists don't want to rile everyone up. I saw the GFS model hallucinate 18 inches total come Wednesday. We'll get less. Maybe 6 inches? No one knows for sure at this point.
3. Over the weekend, you'll want to check Capital Weather Gang daily for their enlightened predictions. I will post here on DCUM, or someone else will.
4. And then there's more stuff coming later in February

I don't know if I have ever met someone who is in more dire need of a hobby than you, PP.

NP here, maybe weather IS this person's hobby. That's a very valid pursuit IMHO.

Seriously. Layoff PP

I agree! PP who gave the detailed report, thank you and please report back.

People are going to hate that school is cancelled on Tuesday and it doesn't start snowing until afternoon.

Can’t they do an early dismissal?

Yes and they have before. If snow is not going to start til about 3 or so then they can do an early dismissal. Any earlier though and they will just do a full cancel.

aka winter

Which is why FCPS should NOT have 2 week winter break. You know this $h!t is coming.

like every six years....calm down

Not going to calm down. Every year or so, FCPS has a reason to close schools for long periods of time. Snow, COVID, snow....
Long winter breaks are not necessary because weather does happen. School after SOLs does NOT count.

Many parents want a long break. And as long as neighboring counties due two weeks off for winter break, so will FCPS because teachers have children in those counties.

Luckily it looks like it will start around 11 am.
