Here's how to report your neighbor for not clearing their sidewalk

While I don’t want anyone to get hurt, I hope some of these homeowners who refuse to clear their sidewalks suffer life-ruining litigation from a slip and fall.

Not everyone is home
Home available to shovel, at all hours of the night
People travel you know

Sure. But I also know of people who are able-bodied and were not out of town last weekend who just let their sidewalks ice up and never did anything about them. It's not that much effort to go and make it easier for people to walk past your house. If you've got a good reason you can't do it, or you weren't in town, that's one thing. If you just didn't feel like it, I'm not going to bother reporting you, but I do think you don't care much about other people.

Ditto for the inconsiderate jerks leaving scooters and ebikes in the middle of walkways.

Yes, those people are also annoying and inconsiderate, but sort of off the topic of snow shoveling, since e-bikes and scooters are not snow. I see very few bikes or scooters in my neighborhood, left on the sidewalk or elsewhere. I see a lot of sidewalks that aren't shoveled.

You are correct sir. I DGAF about you. Report away.

+1, same. Report away.

BTW, complaints are public record. It’s easy to find out who reported you. We identified a neighbor who made frivolous complaints about our dog.

Sounds like you are an awful neighbor. If you’re defending people who refuse to shovel, I highly doubt your dog complaints were actually frivolous. More likely that you’re just an irresponsible home and dog owner.
Also you are able to report anonymously. Especially for something like clearing snow where you can actually see/prove very easily that it wasn’t done.

Coward. If you’re going to be the neighborhood snitch at least fess up to who you are.

Nah, do your lawful duty and you won’t have an issue. Just because you want to “punish” the person looking out for everyone else doesn’t mean you get to.

Three whole weeks? Don't think it was that long.

Yeah, it's annoying to see a stretch covered with ice, so I just walk on the snow around it. I shovel mine because of fear of litigation but I guess others don't mind (and I live in a super blue area so you can't blame it on Trump, I know that a bunch of the houses with iced sidewalks had Harris/Biden posters last year). Life goes on.

The Swiss Embassy is a big offender in Woodley Park and you can’t tell me it’s because they are enfeebled or can’t afford salt. Tons of people, including school kids, use that sidewalk and it’s treacherous with a hill and a curve.

DDOT needs to fine itself—its failure to de-ice sidewalks on bridges is a dereliction of duty.

I’m in full support of coming down hard on those who don’t do their part to make it safe to walk in the city.

Ok Karen. I think a lot of hardware stores quickly sold out of shovels, ice melt, etc when the snow was coming so maybe chill out a bit.

And yet the Swiss Embassy parking lot and driveway to the ambassador’s residence were completely clear. And DDOT isn’t getting its salt and shovels from Ace.

If it happens once, give people a break. They might be out of town or sick or something else. If it happens a second time, send them a note. If it happens after that report. Unless there is something extraordinary urgent like your elementary age kid has to walk on their sidewalk to catch their school bus I suggest cutting people some slack.

How about neighbors who are older or have physical impairments that make walking difficult already who then need to walk across your icy sidewalk? Does that still deserve a break for the thirty something couple who won’t shovel their sidewalk but wait outside for their uber every Friday and Saturday night to go out to dinner?

So they are mourning. Give them a break, please.
