Why are these schools talked about so much on this forum? They seem pretty unremarkable, not terrible and not that great. What gives?

Syracuse, yes.

The other 2, no way.

Oh please, get over yourself. How miserable do you have to be to write a post like this?

+10, I have the displeasure of talking to various students for career help and referrals due to my industry. The kids in the ivies today are of disappointing quality, passionless, and simply only willing to do something for money. I don’t want my kid around that crowd.

They might have a low overall SAT because they accept first gen students or students who might not attend college otherwise. I met one working a campus job to get free tuition.

Elon has one of the best music performance programs. If you want to be on Broadway, it’s a connected place.

You should probably research the benefits of the individual programs rather than stick to generalities.

If I wanted to be on broadcast TV, Syracuse would be my top choice. Their Newhouse school probably accepts 7-12%.

All this!

Plus, these schools all have a fun factor.

Agree. Bad morals and values.

I have a colleague who went Clemson and is absolutely amazing.

My son's best friend is at Syracuse for performing arts and very happy.

I don't know Elon well but only hear good things about it.

Fwiw my kid goes to a very selective LAC and there are sh*tposts about it here on the regular. Unfortunately these forums bring out the haters for all schools - read the thread about underwhelming campuses to see people crapping on how unimpressed they were with Harvard, Princeton, Yale, etc.

Apologies to OP for taking up space on the planet even though I didn't go to an Ivy.

Hi Fellow alum! Same thoughts here, although I live in Raleigh after doing my time in DC. It’s a great school.

It's DCUM. People will express opinions on many schools, from Harvard to Elon.

If you don't have thick skin, stay off it.

Not known for generous MERIT aid. Need based is another matter (not that the DCUM contingent would know anything about that).

Right? My DC goes to a mid-sized private that is similarly derided on this board. DC receives some merit aid but is able to attend because of very generous financial aid, which brings the cost to around 10K per year more than the state flagship public university.

Another agree. For us it’s about the student body and peers.

I was the original poster. Perhaps I didn’t make my post clear, but I am an Ivy alum. My DS got into Uchicago recently, and I’m ecstatic, because it has proven much more to accept students impassioned by academics. There’s a lot more to school thank making money, and I think that should be underscored more often.

Anonymous wrote:Can the OP chime in with the intent of the question? I mean, you know that not every student is going to an Ivy or T25, right? What I do not understand is the reason for questions like this. The schools you list are very solid schools and are in fact reaches for many students. Do you mean to ask why would a student with a 1550 go to these schools? Well that is a different question (and there are many good answers). Are you asking why a child with a 3.8-4.0 and 1250 - or lower stats applying as a reach - would try for these schools? The answer is they are good schools with good name recognition and a fun atmosphere. Finances are another question and up to each family. What is not to understand?

+1 How annoying. One of those was on my kid's list, we know lots of kid there we love it and who graduated and have great jobs. He'd have been super happy there had he not gotten into his ED.

I'm lost looking for the point of your question. Do you have an approved list of schools we can talk about?

You are obnoxious and I prefer the Bucknell booster to you. “Impassioned by academics” is a euphemism for tool. Get it?
