Why are these schools talked about so much on this forum? They seem pretty unremarkable, not terrible and not that great. What gives?

Clearly many people like them. I would be pleased if my kids went to any of them. Not everyone can get into Brown.

Because college should be attainable for lots of students. These are all solid schools that provide a good education and enjoyable college experience.

Exactly. They’re unremarkable, not some crazed school that’s impossible to get into. It might sound crazy, but people like having a few college options that are enjoyable and easier to get into. All of these are safe, fun schools to go to and aren’t ridiculously far.

Syracuse’s architecture school and their Newhouse and Maxwell colleges are among the best.

They might have a low overall SAT because they accept first gen students or students who might not attend college otherwise. I met one working a campus job to get free tuition.

Elon has one of the best music performance programs. If you want to be on Broadway, it’s a connected place.

You should probably research the benefits of the individual programs rather than stick to generalities.

If I wanted to be on broadcast TV, Syracuse would be my top choice. Their Newhouse school probably accepts 7-12%.

Agree Syracuse has a bunch of attractive programs by reputation.

I have a friend in MI. Her kid's reach schools are Syracuse and American. He's smart but his GPA is rocky.

According to my friend, Syracuse's campus is appealing and they have good undergrad advising.

Geez, because MOST kids of MOST people in this area will actually go to good schools like this. Good schools, good atmosphere. So hard for some of you to believe that the rest of us don't think like you.

Way overpriced IMO for the average student.

Two of those schools are expensive AF and not known for generous aid.

They are used as targets for those with 1280-1350, commonly because Uva and WM in state are reaches and they do not want JMU/CNU. clemson/UGA Syracuse/Elon are reaches for those below 1250. They are likelies for those with 1450+ and commonly not even considered for those close to the top of the class with 1530+, who grind for T10. Who cares? Focus on the right schools for your kid. There is nothing wrong with any of these schools if the fit your kid. They are all good schools in the general landscape of all 2000 colleges in the US. They are likely poor fits for someone who would truly thrive in an ivy/stanford/Duke environment. YMMV.

Clemson EA has pretty much the same acceptance rate as Emory ED1. Take that, Emory mom.

This response is about a decade out of date. Median score means half the students have higher. Your analysis totally fails on that level.

Some people are overly fixated on acceptance %, when it might be irrelevant or misleading.

It can be affected by things like having an easy or cheap application process; having cheap tuition or great financial aid; or non-academic factors like good weather or a winning football team.

None of these factors really affects the education they offer, yet some people’s love of competition & exclusivity ends up equating low acceptance % with high academic quality.
