Are Univ Utah and Univ of Wisconsin roughly in the same tier academically?

I am an academic, and I don't know anyone who would consider Utah and Wisconsin comparable.

All those metrics are worthless to employers other than the business and law schools rankings.

I didn’t know that Michigan spends huge amounts money on advertising? Please cite your sources.

Not PP. Michigan sent my high stats kid loads of marketing material. Loads.

Fits the desperate administration there. They’re insufferable and think it’s helping them compete with Wisc/ILL/NW.

My kid applied to Utah. Had no desire to apply to Wisconsin. He knows that the state of Utah is growing and Wisconsin isn’t.

Most large state schools are pretty much the same.

not reading 5 pages, but Utah has very easy residential requirements for OOS so while WI may be a more national school, Utah likely has just as good or better ROI

Since law school is a grad program, the quality of the university's law school is irrelevant if the student is thinking about applying to law school down the road. In addition, undergrad prestige plays little role in law school admission. For the purpose of law school admission, Utah and Wisconsin are equivalent.

Bro if that’s true then Wisconsin would be equal to UVA academically. If we’re just going off of academic programs than Wisco has the same or better rankings as UVA’s academic departments. But to say such a thing would be an absurdity. Business and Law makes you elite, therefore UVA is better.

"Wisco"? - UW or Wisconsin. No one calls it Wisco who lives or goes there.

If one doesn’t live or go there, they don’t call it anything because it’s not even on the radar of such people.

It’s not a name brand institution like Harvard or Berkeley or countless others. It’s fine. It’s a good school. It’s just not the level of school that its boosters here at DCUM seem to think …

You must be joking.

What kind of people have never heard of a college within the top 50 at USNews?

The clowning on schools outside the top 10 is just getting sad and lazy.

It’s not that they’ve never heard of it. There are hundreds of schools that people hear about in a lifetime. It’s just that it’s not on the radar for most people because it’s not perceived to be a “top school” by the vast majority of people.

Which school? Wisconsin is certainly perceived as one of the best graduate schools. Generally speaking, the more intelligent you are the more likely you are to know how good of a school Wisconsin is. Let’s say you’re an absolute dumbass, so you only want to major in business. Then Wisconsin is good but not amazing. But if you have a 180 IQ and want a PHD in math, only Uchicago/Mich/NW will compete with Wisconsin at that level ( along with many others subjects)

Let’s be honest, we’re not comparing HYPSM to a tiny, little known local college.
Wisconsin and Utah are both great, large state schools full of excellent academic and extracurricular opportunities, and their graduates can be very successful when goal oriented and motivated. Career and grad school prospects from either university are strong when a student is motivated and has good grades. The “national” name recognition of Wisconsin is marginally better than Utah, depending on what part of the country you are in. Whatever gap there might be in terms of perceived prestige will continue to shrink in the coming years.

Wisconsin is objectively on the decline. It used to be view as a second Michigan, now there’s talks of Ohio State surpassing it in the coming years. Wisconsinites are dirt stupid and consistently defund their state university.

Rankings aside, I think of these two schools as peers.

49% is different from 87%

And OOS acceptance at Wisconsin is 18%
