Stop commenting on my weight

People are assuming I changed my eating habits, and even go as far as to say they are proud of me for eating healthy and losing weight. I know they mean to be kind. I know they think they're being complimentary. But I'm so over people commenting on my weight. My weight gain was largely out of my control in the first place (went from a size zero to a size 14), and it makes me feel self conscious. So PSA - think twice before commenting on someone's weight loss - it may be a sensitive topic for them.

In today’s America, a person just can’t win.

Let’s all just stop speaking to one another entirely.

If your ia of conversation is commenting on someone's appearance, yes, please stop speaking to me

This not complimenting people on losing weight is a recent phenomenon. It’s gonna take awhile for people to learn this.

I lost 5 pounds and somebody noticed. They commented and it made me feel so good!

It's bizarre how comfortable people feel commenting on other people's bodies, and so inappropriate if we look at it objectively. There's NO REASON to comment on someone else's body. It's out of line at best, extremely harmful at worst. The fact that a small portion of the population likes to receive commentary on their body does not mean that the rest of the population should have to endure it as small talk or an attempt at a compliment (or insult, for that matter). Please just MYOB when it comes to people's bodies.

I thought her reaction was incredibly childish and uncalled for. People are telling her she looks great and she jumps down their throats? Grow the hell up.

Hmmm. You don't see why she may have snapped? Let me guess, you have never been in PPD/PPA and likely have 2 kids or less

+1

I was very thin due to a digestive disorder and received too many comments about my weight. People even asked if I had an eating disorder, and this got really old really fast.

Yeah. That pisses me off too. I lost an extreme amount of weight (like I health thon) in a very short time due to trauma. Several people knew what had happened but rather than seeing me, they saw the weight. People ignore obvious mental / health problems and focus on weight gain/loss. Skinny = virtuous. Fat = failure. That is the mentality and weirdly, the higher the socio-economic class the worse the problem is.

Sorry, OP.

Ok? But he clearly has no issues commenting on everyone else’s body and thinks thin is great and fat is bad.

Please comment on my weightloss! The new social norm don't apply to me. I will gladly respect anyone's wishes and not say whatever offends them, but please, somebody notice my weightloss. It was a lot of hard work, especially given I am middle age and have thyroid issues and stress galore. Tell me I look fabulous and I will make my day. I can be vain and trivial as a distraction from all the challenges in life. Please comment! Maybe I need a t-shirt!

Unless someone brings up their looks/body first, I don't bring it up. I don't understand people who initiate comments about other people's looks or bodies.

I didn't say one word about her body. You never tell someone how great they look, in general terms? Bizarre.
