Sometimes yes and sometimes no-- with longer events they won't let you go all the way to the beginning of it's past the halfway point. So if it's in hour 3 or 4 of a 4 our event you can't watch hours 1 and 2 until the replay is available. |
Week 2. |
You can always go back and watch older gymnastics competitions featuring the starved, abused gymnasts being “artistic”. The rest of us will enjoy the most impressive athletes we’ll ever see in our lives. |
DP and I of course would not want to go back to the years of abuse and eating disorders in the sport. But I do miss there being more gymnasts who focused on artistry -- clean lines and fluid movement. It doesn't have to be everyone. There have always been gymnasts focused on power and doing the hardest and biggest skills, and they've always been fun to watch. But there are generally also gymnasts who don't do the very hardest skills but are able to compete by executing skills at a lower difficulty level really beautifully. While I have no issue with Russia being kept out of these Olympics, they have historically offered some of what I'm talking about-- a few gymnasts with a lot of classical ballet training who really focus on execution over high start values. The Italian team probably comes closest to this in this Olympics. |

I like to go back and watch old SNL Olympic skits.

The same thing has happened to figure skating. The scoring system favors more difficult elements completed with errors over easier elements performed perfectly. That’s why big step outs on vault got the top scores of the night. I haven’t watched the Russians in gymnastics in some time, but I know in figure skating they’ve dropped artistry in favor of setting up quad pass after quad pass because that’s where they score the most points. |

LOL I'm not a strong swimmer. |
| Not sure if anyone mentioned watching the cross country horse race in Versailles? That was insane. |
I did, and the show jumping portion this morning |
It’s called eventing, and cross country is not a race
|
It's fun watching these sports/events that don't dominate US television the rest of the year. |
The course through the forest with different themed jumps was spectacular. |
| The venue for Fencing is awesome! Also the view from the Archery course. I'm really enjoying the overall visual appeal of these Olympics. 😀 |
These are the type of things I like to watch in the Olympics. Not just the obscure events, but the sports like gymnastics and swimming and diving where the Olympics are the pinnacle event for that sport. I have no interest in watching sports like basketball, soccer, or even tennis, which have there own high-profile leagues and competitions. I mean I love Rafael Nadal, but I don't find watching him win an Olympic medal to be as meaningful. |
